Project Story

Inspiration

Every day, cities face problems like potholes, overflowing garbage, broken streetlights, and damaged roads. These issues may seem small individually, but together they affect safety, mobility, and quality of life. We wanted to build a solution that could make reporting and identifying these problems faster and smarter.

What We Built

CivicLens AI is an AI-powered civic reporting platform that helps identify and report urban infrastructure problems. Users can submit images of civic issues, and the platform uses AI to detect and classify problems such as potholes, garbage overflow, damaged roads, and broken streetlights.

How It Works

A user uploads an image of a civic issue. CivicLens AI analyses the image, identifies the problem, and organises the report with relevant information. These reports can then be used to understand recurring problems and help prioritise repairs.

Why It Matters

Traditional civic reporting can be slow, fragmented, and difficult to track. CivicLens AI creates a more structured way to turn real-world problems into actionable data, helping communities communicate issues more effectively and supporting smarter urban management.

How We Built It

We built CivicLens AI using a modern web stack with Next.js, React, TypeScript, AI-powered image analysis, authentication, and a dashboard for managing and visualising reports.

Challenges

One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that could make AI detection useful in a real-world civic workflow rather than simply recognising an object. We focused on creating a complete experience—from detecting an issue to organising it into a useful report.

What's Next

We want to expand CivicLens AI with better computer-vision models, location-based issue mapping, severity prediction, duplicate-report detection, analytics, and integrations that could allow municipalities or organisations to respond to issues more efficiently.
