Inspiration
Cities receive thousands of civic complaints every day, but reporting them is often slow, confusing, and lacks transparency. Citizens struggle to know where to report issues, while authorities spend valuable time manually sorting complaints. We wanted to bridge this gap by creating an AI-powered platform that makes civic issue reporting smarter, faster, and more efficient for both citizens and local governments.
What it does
CivicLens AI is an intelligent civic issue management platform that enables citizens to report problems such as potholes, garbage, water leaks, broken streetlights, and damaged roads within seconds.
Using AI, the platform automatically categorizes complaints, assigns priority based on severity, identifies the appropriate department, and provides real-time tracking. Authorities can monitor all reports through a modern analytics dashboard with insights into complaint trends, department performance, and resolution progress.
Key features include:
- AI-powered complaint categorization
- Smart priority detection
- Interactive dashboard and analytics
- Complaint tracking
- Department-wise management
- Responsive and modern user interface
How we built it
We built CivicLens AI using a modern full-stack architecture focused on performance, scalability, and user experience.
Frontend:
- Next.js
- React
- Tailwind CSS
- Framer Motion
Backend:
- Node.js
- Express
- MongoDB
AI:
- Gemini API for intelligent complaint analysis and categorization
Other tools:
- Authentication
- Charts and analytics
- Responsive UI components
- Git & GitHub for version control
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing an AI workflow that could accurately classify different types of civic complaints while remaining fast and reliable. Building a responsive dashboard that presents meaningful analytics without overwhelming users also required multiple design iterations. Ensuring a clean user experience across different devices and integrating AI seamlessly into the reporting workflow were additional challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of building a polished, production-ready application that solves a real-world problem. We successfully integrated AI into the complaint management process, designed an intuitive user experience, and created an analytics dashboard that provides actionable insights for authorities. Most importantly, we transformed a traditionally manual process into a smarter and more transparent digital solution.
What we learned
This project strengthened our understanding of full-stack development, AI integration, API design, responsive UI development, and scalable application architecture. We also learned how thoughtful user experience and practical AI can work together to solve meaningful public problems.
What's next for CivicLens AI
Our roadmap includes:
