Inspiration

This project was inspired by the growing impact of climate change on agriculture, particularly on small and marginal farmers. In India alone, nearly 80% of marginal farmers are affected by adverse climatic events, often leading to severe crop losses and financial instability. I wanted to create a solution that helps identify risks early and supports timely action to protect livelihoods.

What it does

World Crop Monitor visualizes global crop stress on an interactive map using satellite data, weather anomalies, and crop baselines. Users can track risk levels, monitor trends over time, and access summaries to make timely decisions and interventions.

How we built it

We built this project by combining AI tools such as Kilo with continuous research and experimentation. Driven by curiosity and a strong motivation to help protect crops worldwide, we explored open data sources and intelligent analysis techniques to transform environmental information into meaningful insights.

Challenges we ran into

Working with different data sources was confusing at first, and turning complex climate data into something easy to understand wasn’t simple. We also had to balance accuracy while working with limited time and resources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully turned complex climate and satellite data into a simple, easy-to-understand web platform. Building an early warning system for crop stress as a beginner developer and making it accessible using open data is something we’re genuinely proud of.

What we learned

We learned how to work with real-world climate and satellite data, and how challenging it is to turn complex information into something people can actually use. The project also taught us the importance of research, experimentation, and building with real impact in mind.

What's next for World Crop Monitor

We plan to improve accuracy by adding more data sources and better crop stress indicators. We also want to expand region-level insights, add alerts for early warnings, and make the platform more useful for farmers, NGOs, and policymakers worldwide.
