Inspiration
DriverAwaken was inspired by the risks of driver fatigue, especially among truck and long-distance drivers who spend many hours on the road.
What it does
The app uses the phone’s front camera to detect signs of drowsiness such as prolonged eye closure, yawning, and head movements, then sends real-time alerts to the driver.
How we built it
We built DriverAwaken with Flutter and on-device computer vision, using facial landmarks, EAR, PERCLOS, head pose estimation, sound alerts, and vibration.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was detecting drowsiness accurately in real time while avoiding false alerts caused by lighting, camera angles, or normal blinking.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a real-time drowsiness monitoring system that works directly on the smartphone without requiring additional hardware.
What we learned
We learned how to combine computer vision, facial analysis, calibration, and real-time mobile processing into a practical safety application.
What's next for DriverAwaken
We plan to improve detection accuracy, add trip reports, driver fatigue statistics, emergency contact alerts, and support for fleet monitoring.
