Inspiration

Every day, citizens encounter civic issues such as potholes, overflowing garbage bins, water leakages, broken streetlights, and damaged roads. However, existing complaint systems are often slow, manual, and lack transparency. Many complaints remain unresolved due to duplicate reports, incorrect information, or inefficient prioritization. We wanted to create an AI-powered solution that simplifies reporting while helping municipal authorities respond faster and make data-driven decisions

What it does

CivicEye AI is an intelligent civic issue management platform that enables citizens to report problems by simply uploading a photo. The system uses YOLOv8 and CNN models to automatically detect and classify civic issues, captures the GPS location, verifies complaints to reduce duplicates, and forwards them to municipal authorities through a centralized dashboard. Citizens can also track the status of their complaints in real time, ensuring transparency throughout the resolution process.

How we built it

The project combines modern AI and web technologies to build a complete end-to-end solution: YOLOv8 + CNN for AI-based image detection and classification. OpenCV for image preprocessing. FastAPI for backend API development. React.js for an interactive and responsive frontend. Firebase/PostgreSQL for secure data storage and user management. Google Maps API for GPS location tagging and visualization. Git & GitHub for version control and project collaboration.

Challenges we ran into

Developing an accurate AI model for multiple civic issue categories required selecting suitable datasets and optimizing detection performance. Integrating AI predictions with GPS-based reporting, designing a smooth user experience, preventing duplicate complaints, and ensuring seamless communication between the frontend, backend, and database were some of the major technical challenges. Balancing accuracy with fast response times was also an important consideration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built an AI-powered civic issue detection and reporting platform. Automated issue classification using YOLOv8 and Computer Vision. Integrated GPS for accurate location-based complaint reporting. Developed a real-time dashboard for municipal authorities. Enabled live complaint tracking and citizen notifications. Reduced duplicate and false complaints through AI verification. Designed a scalable solution for smarter and more efficient city governance. Combined AI, Web, and GIS technologies into one unified platform

What we learned

Building CivicEye AI enhanced our understanding of computer vision, object detection, REST API development, and full-stack application architecture. We gained practical experience in integrating AI models into real-world applications and learned how technology can address urban governance challenges. Most importantly, we realized that AI can significantly improve civic engagement by making public services more efficient, transparent, and accessible.

What's next for CivicEye AI

We plan to extend CivicEye AI by introducing multilingual support, predictive analytics for identifying civic issue hotspots, offline complaint submission, automated work-order generation, and integration with Smart City and Municipal Corporation systems to enable large-scale deployment across cities.
