CivicBoost — Turning bystanders into active civic champions
Inspiration
Local government decisions shape our daily lives, but clunky municipal sites and multi-hour town halls make participating painful. Critical citizen feedback gets lost in noise, while city leaders are left without clear signal.
CivicBoost bridges this gap—transforming passive public complaints into structured, actionable proposals that residents can refine and city leaders can actually act on.
What it does
CivicBoost is an interactive platform for community-driven public policy:
- 💡 Instant Proposal Creation: Submit local ideas or infrastructure needs with automatic categorization and geotagging.
- 🗳️ Real-Time Community Refinement: Upvote, discuss, and refine projects alongside neighbors.
- 📊 AI Sentiment Synthesis: Automatically condenses hundreds of public comments into 30-second executive briefs for city staff.
- 📍 Live Impact Tracking: Follow proposals from neighborhood ideas to council approval and implementation.
How we built it
- Frontend: Next.js, React, and TypeScript with ultra-fast modern styling for seamless mobile and desktop performance.
- Backend: GraphQL API powered by Node.js for rapid, real-time community state updates.
- Infrastructure: Serverless deployment on Cloudflare Edge for sub-second global responses.
- AI Pipeline: LLM-powered text processing to auto-tag posts, group duplicate issues, and extract actionable consensus.
Challenges we ran into
- Cutting Noise Without Losing Context: Engineering prompt pipelines that summarize messy comment threads into unbiased, accurate policy briefs.
- Real-Time Edge State: Syncing live upvotes and status updates instantly across serverless edge functions without heavy database latency.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Zero-to-MVP Sprint: Built a fully operational pipeline—from citizen post to AI summary brief—during the hackathon.
- Blazing Fast Performance: Achieved instant page loads and zero-friction UX through our edge-first architecture.
- Human-First Design: Crafted an intuitive interface that makes municipal engagement feel as smooth as modern social apps.
What we learned
Civic tech doesn't suffer from a lack of public opinion—it suffers from a lack of structure. The key isn't just collecting more feedback, but distilling existing community intent into clear, prioritized action items.
What's next for CivicBoost
- 🗺️ Interactive Map View: Spatial clustering to view and filter community initiatives by district or street block.
- 🏛️ 311 & City Portal Integration: Pipe verified proposals straight into official city ticketing and project workflows.
- 💰 Participatory Budgeting: Let residents allocate virtual budget tokens to competing neighborhood projects to highlight priority spending.
