Inspiration Civic Trust was born out of a deep concern for the pervasive issues of corruption, inefficiency, and lack of transparency in government projects in Kenya. We wanted to create a platform that empowers citizens to actively participate in the monitoring and reporting of public projects, ensuring that funds are used effectively and that every project is completed to the highest standard. The inspiration came from a personal experience when we won a hackathon and were never awarded the money, we felt a strong need to check with the funders if it was true that there was no prize money from the source.
What it does Civic Trust is a web platform that provides real-time tracking and transparency for government projects. It lists projects as new, active, or closed and provides detailed information on project costs, schedules, contractors, engineers, and leaders involved. Citizens can upload images and status updates on ongoing projects, participate in the verification process, and even earn rewards for their contributions. The platform ensures that every project is monitored, every fund is accounted for, and every voice is heard.
How we built it We built Civic Trust using a scalable, cloud-based infrastructure that integrates with government APIs to collect and standardize project data. The backend was developed with a focus on security and efficiency, while the frontend was designed to be intuitive and accessible for users across various devices. We used modern web technologies, such as React for the user interface and Node.js for the backend, ensuring that the platform is both responsive and robust.
Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges we are expecting is access to data integrating with existing government systems and ensuring that the data collected is accurate and up-to-date. Ensuring data security and privacy while maintaining transparency was another significant challenge. we plan to use systems to help us standardize whatever data is collected to be imported automatically.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud to be part of the hackathon, building for a better Kenya and hanging out with like-minded people.
What we learned Throughout the development of Civic Trust, we learned the importance of collaboration between the government, citizens, and technology providers. We gained insights into the complexities of public data management and the critical role that user feedback plays in creating an effective platform. Additionally, we learned how to balance the need for transparency with the necessity of data security and privacy. We have learned how sites like Govstack work with developers to build DPI systems and how to build systems that collect data from different sources.
What's next for Civic Trust The next steps for Civic Trust include expanding the platform to cover more regions and integrating additional features such as advanced analytics and mobile applications. We plan to collaborate with more government bodies and NGOs to ensure the platform’s reach and impact continue to grow. We’re also exploring ways to enhance the reward system, gamifying citizen participation and encouraging more people to get involved. Ultimately, our goal is to make Civic Trust a cornerstone of transparent governance not just in Kenya, but across other regions facing similar challenges.
