Inspiration
We have friends and family who live in New York who constantly complain about how much trash they see on the streets and the amount of people who litter. Since New York is one of the most densely populated places in the US we figured there was some correlation between the amount of waste in New York and the amount of people living there. That lead us to wonder about the waste management centers in New York and how many they have because there still seems to be a lot of trash lying around in New York.
What it does
This simple website has a table with the population of the 4 biggest cities in New York and the % of the waste they make of certain categories. Ex: New York City produces 42.3% of the food waste of the 4 biggest cities in New York. Additionally, there is a map which shows the dirtiest cities in New York. Finally, there is an interactive map of every waste management center in the state of New York. When you hover over the locations it displays info such as who owns it, address, and the type of waste they dispose of.
How we built it
We used HTML to code our website. For the interactive map we had to find a dataset (preferably in .csv format) and create a "Google My Maps" and then embed that into our website.
Challenges we ran into
We initially had trouble finding a dataset which met all our requirements, but eventually we were able to get one. Additionally, we had trouble with the formatting and HTML because we've never coded in HTML before.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to code a basic functioning website in a day using HTML a language neither of us have previous coding experience in.
What we learned
We learned about the basics in HTML and formatting a locally run website.
What's next for Civic Hacks - Waste Management Project - Team PK
We want to further develop this website and make it locally hosted on flask a python library in order to implement more interactive maps and dashboards. We also want to make our website look more professional and eventually not just have it locally hosted, but maybe get it registered under a domain.
