City Active is a platform which aims to make sport and physical activity more accessible to all.

It has 3 core elements aimed to more efficiently connect key stakeholders.

For residents - an accessible website/app to discover and book facilities/classes/online content etc. For operators - system to manage and take bookings of their facilities and programming. For government - system to manage activity offering and access data about physical activity.

Currently participation sport and physical activity is largely offline and therefore hard to access (Up to 70%). 34% of people (UK) state that this is a major barrier to participation.

This idea aims to digitalise a region's sport and physical activity offering and help all ages and abilities find something suitable for them. Our research/pilots show that by making sport digitally accessible (searchable/bookable) this leads to an increase in participation from between 10-25%.

Although this platform is aimed at all people - it is especially targeted at more vulnerable groups and the inactive part of the population as this is where the most value is created.

For every search someone does within the system we want them to get results in which they find something which is suitable for them and we do this by showing a range of results which are varied in price, difficulty, time and in the way they can be consumed (in person, video, audio etc).

In order for end users to be able to discover great local (and online) activities/facilities/coaches etc, these offerings need to be online and therefore the back-end of this system allows these providers to a) promote and manage their offerings on the consumer website and take online bookings. b) through open data promote themselves across a range of other platforms consuming outward facing API's.

With all of the great data that is being tracked through the system. Govt organisations (who would be the customer) can understand a lot more about their regions physical activity levels and gain insights never before possible which increases efficiency and informs strategy.

This technical solution is designed to complement a region's physical activity strategy and a key part of the success of this project is for the region we work with to apply open data standards. This means local providers and their systems are sharing data ‘openly’ (helping populate the platform with local opportunities). In turn, this platform will publish data ‘openly’ - allowing innovative solutions to be created. (such as medical applications, social prescribing tools and more).

City Active addresses SDG’s 3 & 8 - this solution promotes better health and wellbeing as well as helping to drive innovation within the sector, acting as the digital infrastructure for sport and physical activity. As well as lowering the barriers to participation, it also lowers the barriers to delivery by helping operators reach more participants and therefore stimulates the related workforce. We are currently working on a project with The Commonwealth and Mauritius Sports Council which is directly related to addressing the SDG’s.

In order to implement this idea and to make it more commercially viable, we would need to undertake a thorough R&D process (within a City) which would allow us to communicate with end users and other key stakeholders within a local context and run pilots across demographic groups before deployment.
