Inspiration

Many people don't know how to vote or where their nearest voting location is. Political polarization and low voter turnout are pressing issues in America's democratic system. Many people are becoming more polarized in their political views due to limited exposure to different perspectives. Additionally, a significant percentage of eligible voters do not participate in elections. We hope to solve this issue by encouraging voter turnout through the creation of voter parties.

What it does

It shows your nearest voting location and allows you to discover all your friends who also fall into the same voting location so you can all go to the same location together and have a after party. Voting parties bring together individuals with different political beliefs to collectively participate in the electoral process. By fostering an inclusive and diverse environment, we hope to bridge the divide and promote dialogue, understanding, and engagement among voters. Our website provides various resources, such as registration information, assistance guides, accessible polling locations, voting guides, and additional resources to help individuals navigate the voting process and make informed decisions.

How we built it

We used primarily Javascript, HTML, and CSS and received our data from the Google Civic API.

Challenges we ran into

I am fairly new to javascript, so I ran into multiple bugs, especially creating the login and registration pages. I also had some trouble calling the Google Civic API, but luckily I managed to learn it over the weekend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall I am really proud of the whole website: Being able to create a pretty web page that talks to google civic info api to get nearest voting location and show all friends who are going to same voting location.

What's next for Citizen Voting Party

We plan to allow people to register from different locations, and create subgroups with same voting locations and allow people to register within those subgroups. I also hope to enable these subgroups to be discovered by people in the vicinity to enable services like senior care, day care and disabled care, so that more and more marginalized groups can vote.
