Inspiration

In Mata v. Avianca (2023), lawyers were sanctioned for citing court cases that didn't exist. We ran those fake citations through Ezio and got GREEN 94–100 with accuracy "not scored". The score never checked whether the cases were real.

What it does

Citation Gate checks a memo before it goes to the partner. Every case is checked against the firm's trusted and fabricated lists: fake cases are blocked, wrong years or pages are blocked, and unknown cases are held for a human. It also catches misattributed holdings (e.g. giving Gideon the exclusionary rule, which is Mapp's holding) and overstated ones. When it finds a wrong citation, it suggests the correct one, and one click re-checks the memo. The memo is only sent when the gate approves. If Ezio goes down, we still block fake cases and never approve blind.

How we built it

Python standard library on the Approval-Gate starter, with a plain HTML/JS page that runs fully offline.

Challenges

Catching new phrasings without hard-coding answers, and not over-blocking good memos ("cannot afford a lawyer" isn't contradicting Gideon).

Result

50/50 measured on the hidden final set.
