Inspiration

The inspiration for Circulate Closet came from a challenge I face daily. I have an endless desire for new styles and outfits, but limited funds and closet space make it impossible to keep buying clothes. Too often, I wear an item a few times before it gets tucked away, taking up space and going unworn—leading to wasted clothing. I realized there must be a way to address both needs: the craving for endless style options and the constraints of budget and storage, while also reducing clothing waste. That’s when the idea of Circulate Closet was born—a circulating closet that lets everyone enjoy fresh, varied looks each day with limitless choices, without the cost or waste of constantly purchasing new clothes.

What it does

Our service is designed for young women aged 18-28 who seek the perfect outfit for specific occasions—be it travel, parties, or unique events—without the hassle and expense of buying something they may only wear once. Imagine planning a beach getaway and needing resort wear that wouldn’t typically be part of your everyday wardrobe. Instead of purchasing these items for just one trip, our customers can rent them from us, saving both money and closet space. Likewise, for those living in tropical climates without the need for winter wear, our service offers a practical solution. When they plan a trip to colder destinations, they can simply rent the warm clothing they need from us, avoiding the cost of buying winter apparel they may not use again.

Our business model includes two convenient options:

  1. Customers can either subscribe or rent individual pieces as needed.
  2. Alternatively, if they love a rented piece, they have the option to purchase it outright.

In this way, we’re creating a wardrobe that flows with our customers' lives, giving them flexible access to endless styles without the waste or high cost of ownership.

How we built it

We began by researching the target market and confirming demand among women aged 18-28 in China who are interested in sustainable fashion solutions. We then developed our own platform, including a website and mini-program, to allow users to easily browse and rent clothing based on style or season. Focusing on user experience, inventory management, and effective marketing strategies, we aimed to create a streamlined rental service that offers convenient access to a wide variety of styles, helping users avoid the cycle of buying clothes that are rarely worn.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout our journey, we’ve encountered several key challenges: Sourcing Quality Clothing at Affordable Prices: Finding suppliers who offer both high-quality and cost-effective clothing has been a major hurdle. Balancing quality with price is essential for our business, but it’s challenging to secure reliable partners who meet our standards. Building Brand Awareness in a Competitive Market: Competing with established brands has required significant marketing efforts. Differentiating ourselves and reaching our target audience on a limited budget has been an ongoing challenge. Limited Funding and Operational Complexity: Operating with constrained resources has made it difficult to manage the logistics and daily operations smoothly. Expanding our service offerings and ensuring quality with limited funds requires strategic planning and resourcefulness. Maintaining Hygiene and Quality in Rentals: Cleanliness and garment care are top concerns for customers using rental services. Ensuring our clothes are thoroughly cleaned, well-maintained, and consistently up to customer standards is crucial but resource-intensive. Managing Inventory for Changing Fashion Needs: Keeping up with evolving fashion trends and customer preferences means continually updating our inventory. This adds a layer of complexity to inventory management, as we must balance new styles with customer demand. Encouraging Customer Trust in Sustainable Fashion: Many consumers are still adjusting to the concept of renting instead of buying. Building trust in the sustainability and practicality of our model requires continuous customer education and outreach.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team had been working on this project for an amount of time, our time had made market investigation based on the Chinese, Malaysian, and the Singaporean market, involving the market trend of the different types of clothes products; the expecting market trend in the future; our main competitors that we will face; the average price and the consumer confidence of these three countries. To an extent, we had been to HangZhou’s and Haining’s clothing factory for an on the spot investigation purpose.

What we learned

Through building the project, we gained valuable insights into the fashion rental market and the preferences of young consumers seeking sustainable options. We learned the importance of understanding user behavior to design a seamless platform that meets their needs for convenience and variety. Additionally, the project highlighted the complexities of inventory management and the logistical demands of a rental-based business, emphasizing the need for efficient operations and clear communication with customers. Finally, we discovered effective marketing strategies to engage our target audience and foster trust in a relatively new service model.

What's next for Circulate Closet

With Circulate Closet, you can simply arrive at your destination and have the perfect outfits waiting for you, creating a truly limitless, shared wardrobe experience. Beyond clothing, we plan to expand our product line to offer a wider variety of items, including accessories, shoes, home goods, and everyday essentials. Our goal is to build a sustainable lifestyle platform that makes it easy to access everything you need, without the waste of ownership.
