Inspiration

As someone who loves special occasions but hated spending hundreds on outfits worn once, I saw a gap: fashion-conscious people wanted quality without waste. Friends kept borrowing each other’s designer pieces—why turn that into a sustainable, scalable marketplace? That’s how CircularWardrobe was born: blend sustainability, accessibility, and trust for peer-to-peer fashion rental.

What it does

CircularWardrobe lets users rent authentic designer outfits for weddings, galas, or vacations—and lets lenders earn passive income by listing their wardrobes. It verifies designer pieces, handles secure payments, coordinates logistics, and fosters trust through reviews and verification.

How we built it

We started with core user flows (browsing, booking, listing) and built a React frontend for seamless UX, paired with a Node.js/Express backend. We integrated Stripe for payments (to split 70/30 lender/platform commissions) and Twilio for in-app messaging. AWS hosted the platform, PostgreSQL stored user/listing data, and Cloudinary managed high-res outfit photos. We added AI + manual checks for designer authenticity.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was building trust: designing a verification process for designer items that was rigorous but not tedious for lenders. Payment hold/release logic (holding funds until return confirmation) also required complex backend work to avoid disputes. We also struggled with balancing logistics flexibility (pickup/drop-off/meetup) with simplicity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a seamless authenticity verification system that gives users confidence, built a payment flow that’s fair for lenders/renters, and designed a UX that feels intuitive for busy users planning special events. Seeing early testers rent their first outfit (and lenders earn their first payout) was incredibly rewarding.

What we learned

We learned that trust is non-negotiable in peer-to-peer marketplaces—transparency in verification, fees, and dispute resolution makes or breaks adoption. We also realized how critical user testing is: early feedback reshaped our logistics flow to prioritize local meetups, which users preferred over formal delivery.

What's next for this project

We’re expanding beyond basic listings to add curated occasion collections, refining the earnings estimator for lenders, and exploring optional cleaning service partnerships (even if it was out of scope for v1). We also want to enhance the mobile web experience (before full iOS/Android apps) to reach more users on-the-go.
