Inspiration ✨

Resource scarcity doesn’t just drain energy—it drains mental bandwidth. BioNeuroFuel was inspired by the need to create a circular system that restores energy access and human cognitive capacity simultaneously, turning waste into opportunity while empowering communities. 🌱🧠

What it does ⚡

  • ♻️ Converts organic waste into biohydrogen, syngas, and commercial chemicals using a zero-waste biorefinery.
  • 🏘️ Implements a Cognitive Resilience Program (CRP) to reduce stress and improve decision-making through jobs, affordable energy, and community funds.
  • 🤖 Uses AI/ML to optimize energy production and measure cognitive impact.
  • 🔄 Creates a sustainable feedback loop linking environmental, economic, and socio-cognitive benefits.

How we built it 🛠️

  • Designed a modular zero-waste chemical process for biohydrogen and chemical production.
  • Developed ML models:
    • RNN for process optimization (maximizing energy yield, minimizing waste)
    • Cognitive Impact Model for measuring stress reduction and mental bandwidth
  • Created a conceptual digital twin to simulate real-world deployment.
  • Integrated community input to ensure cultural relevance and feasibility.

Challenges we ran into ⚠️

  • Modeling the link between energy/economic factors and cognitive outcomes required cross-disciplinary research.
  • Balancing technical complexity with a clear, visual presentation for judges.
  • Translating advanced chemical engineering into a 24-hour ideathon-friendly format.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆

  • Developed a fully integrated circular ecosystem combining energy, economics, and mental health.
  • Created a quantifiable metric: Mental Bandwidth Liberated Score (MBLS) to measure societal impact.
  • Built a scalable blueprint for replication in diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated AI’s critical role in optimizing operations and validating social impact.

What we learned 📚

  • Sustainability is most effective when it considers both material and human capital.
  • AI bridges technical efficiency and social impact, enabling measurable outcomes.
  • Clear, visual storytelling is essential to communicate complex interdisciplinary solutions effectively.

What's next for Circular Energy & Cognitive Resilience 🚀

  • Deploy a pilot biorefinery and CRP in a partner community to collect real-world data.
  • Refine ML models using pilot data for predictive operational and cognitive impact improvements.
  • Package the system as “BioNeuroFuel in a Box” for regional and global adoption.
  • Open-source the technical and AI components to enable replication and community-driven innovation. 🌍

Slide 2 – The Problem 🔍

The Scarcity-Stress Feedback Loop:

  • ♻️ 1.3B tonnes of organic waste wasted annually → pollution + energy poverty
  • ⚡ 760M people lack reliable energy → chronic financial & cognitive stress
  • 🧠 Cognitive burden reduces executive function → poor decision-making & community engagement

Impact: Environment, economy, and mental bandwidth are deeply connected

Slide 3 – Our Solution 💡
