Inspiration

I was inspired by a short story by Jorge Luis Borges titled "The Circular Ruins." What I wanted to do was adapt the story to our times, introducing elements of artificial intelligence and the capacity for machine consciousness, to explore the paradox of the limits of great power—the fact that every program is locked within its code. I also wanted to construct a paradox of time, a reality in which past, present, and future exist interconnected, in a single, continuous moment.

How we built it

I constructed the story following the following workflow: Script, prompts and narrative development with Anthropic Claude Images with Midjourney image editing with Google Nano Banana and Photoshop
Videos with Kling_ai and Runway Music and sound design with Epidemic sound I used many of these tools on Freepik

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges I faced was maintaining the character's consistency and conveying a certain existential weariness in his movements and expressions. This forced me to iterate many times with the models, adjusting the prompts to accurately represent the character's existential state, the time wanderer trapped in his programming.

Another challenge was creating a setting where circularity appeared in different ways, to depict, through photography, the circular desert through which the character walks. We see the moon, circles in the sand, even circles on the robot's face and chest. I wanted all these elements to visually reinforce the dramatic structure of the story. Here, too, I had to iterate extensively, and tools like Google Nano Banana were incredibly useful.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The main achievements are related to the challenges I faced, as I believe the short film, from a photographic standpoint, conveys what I wanted to build dramatically. I'm especially proud of the short film's cinematography, which reinforced my confidence in the creative possibilities of AI.

What we learned

Circular Desert is my first feature film using only AI. I've made others since. But this experience allowed me to learn how to create with AI, how to develop a story and implement a suitable workflow, adapting the frameworks of traditional audiovisual production. I also learned a lot about the importance of iteration in AI creation, and how it's necessary to adjust prompts to achieve the desired results. Above all, I learned, or rather confirmed, that AI has immense possibilities, but that the key is to start with a solid, original idea that allows you to guide the models and make the most of them.

What's next for Circular Desert

I want Circular Desert to continue participating in AI competitions and events, to raise awareness and share this vision I had and was able to fully realize with AI tools with as many people as possible.
