Inspiration

We were inspired by various psychological social experiments as well as philosophical problems that gauge human nature, such as the prisoner's dilemma. This game is a culmination of all of these things. How do we react anonymously behind a screen to strangers and try to make them lose? The project, we feel, is a look into the human psyche.

What it does

Circle of Fifths is a game where you are placed into a room with 4 other anonymous people. You can all talk to each other and interact and whisper with each other if you desire. After 2 minutes of talking, all members of the room must vote to kick a person out of the room. Whoever the majority votes for is kicked from the room. The kicked person is replaced by someone waiting in queue. There is no real winner, but the goal is to remain in the circle for the longest amount of time possible by any means necessary...

How we built it

We split into teams of 3, each tasked with different parts of the project. The first team was involved with coding the back-end and game logic. The other team was involved with designing the front-end and user experience. The final group dealt with the server-side of the game to enable multiplayer. Initially, we worked individually as a group but eventually merged each of our projects into a Github repository.

Challenges we ran into

In the beginning, we did not believe that we would be able to build an entire multiplayer game in the available time we had. Since we started Saturday morning, our group was conflicted with what we wanted to do, but we came together to go with our initial idea of making this game an online multiplayer experience. During development, there were also many problems with things such as UI design, finding a hosting site, and complications with the server-side. But in the end, we pulled through and continued to move forward as a group to develop a game we are proud of!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of the progress achieved during what little time we had. We could not have done this project without each other working hard on our individual tasks.

What we learned

There is a lot that we have learned through our experience at Hack K-State. Learning about server communications with the back-end and WebSockets as well as more advanced UI design in HTML and CSS.

What's next for Circle of Fifths

We would love to keep working on this project to fix any UI and bug fixes. We would also love to have people try out the game for themselves!
