Inspiration
Circle City ExploAR was stemmed from a passion to revolutionize the exploration of historic sites, especially for young learners, by seamlessly blending education and technology. Our vision extended beyond conventional learning methods; we aspired to infuse the element of travel and discovery into the experience. Through the transformative power of augmented reality (AR) and the incentive of the challenge, we aimed to create an immersive journey, redefining how individuals engage with historic sites and fostering a sense of adventure in the realm of education.
What it does
Circle City ExploAR is an interactive AR-based game designed to enhance the learning experience at historic and cultural sites. In this prototype, we immerse users in a captivating quest, prompting them to explore and discover the significance of the Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Indianapolis, Indiana. Through a scavenger hunt format. Users crack the riddles by finding, and collecting hidden objects, learning facts about the history of Monument Circle with each collectible, fostering an engaging and memorable experience.
How we built it
We built Circle City ExploAR by integrating AR technology with interactive gaming elements. Leveraging Google's ARCore platform and Unity, we developed a seamless interface that allows users to scan QR codes, crack the riddle, find the 3D object based on the riddle, tap on the object to collect, learn facts about monument circle and engage with historical content. The game flow was meticulously structured, incorporating onboarding, tutorials, and a quest progression system, ensuring an intuitive and educational experience to learn about a significant historic site.
Challenges we ran into
One of the primary challenges we encountered was fine-tuning the AR experience, user interface aspect of the design, and resolution issues to ensure optimal functionality across various mobile devices. Achieving a balance between travel, discovery, educational content, and gameplay to maintain user engagement while delivering historical information was another hurdle. Additionally, optimizing the game for smooth user navigation within the physical space of the monument presented technical complexities. Designing and building this game is also challenging since some historic monuments are large scale. The question also raised the challenges that occur when it is used in a busy city full of skyscrapers.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud to have successfully created an innovative educational tool that merges technology and the excitement of travel and discovery seamlessly. The completion of a functional prototype that engages users and fosters a deeper understanding of the Soldiers & Sailors Monument stands as a significant accomplishment for our team.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned the intricate process of integrating AR technology to create new travel experiences, especially contributing to the educational aspect of historical sites. Understanding user behavior and preferences, especially concerning gamified learning experiences, provided valuable insights into creating engaging relevant content. Collaboration and effective communication within our team (designers, developers, enthusiasts) were crucial to overcoming technical and design challenges.
What's next for Circle City ExploAR - AR Scavenger Hunt
Moving forward, we aim to expand Circle City ExploAR to encompass additional historic sites, offering a diverse range of travel and discovery experiences. Enhancing the gameplay, adding more interactive elements, and incorporating feedback from users will be our focus. Moreover, we aspire to expand and develop this interactive experience for multiple other famous tourist attractions.
