Inspiration
Cipher was inspired by the growing gap between children’s increasing internet exposure and parents’ limited ability to understand or control digital risks. Existing parental control tools often rely on static blocking, are easy to bypass, or are too complex for everyday families. Rising cases of cyberbullying, explicit content exposure, and screen addiction pushed us to create a smarter, AI-driven, and more accessible solution.
What it does
Cipher is an AI-powered child digital safety platform that combines a browser extension with a desktop agent to monitor browsing activity in real time. It tracks websites, risky searches, time spent online, and harmful interactions, while also detecting unsafe visuals and toxic language. Parents receive live alerts, simple reports, and actionable controls through a dashboard.
How we built it
We built Cipher using a Chrome Extension for browser-level tracking, an Electron.js desktop agent for live polling and tamper protection, Node.js with Express for secure communication, and AI/ML models for unsafe content detection. The parent dashboard visualizes insights, activity trends, and alerts in a simple, user-friendly way.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was making the system hard to bypass. Children could disable extensions or switch browsers, so we solved this by introducing a desktop agent that continuously verifies the extension and requires password-based protection to stop monitoring. Another challenge was converting raw activity logs into simple insights for non-technical parents.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a dual-layer protection system that combines extension-based monitoring with desktop-level tamper detection. We are especially proud of making the platform accessible for all parents, including those with limited technical knowledge, through simple insights, automation, and real-time alerts.
What we learned
We learned that digital safety is not just about blocking content but also about building trust, transparency, and accessibility. We also gained strong experience in desktop app architecture, browser-extension communication, real-time monitoring, and tamper-resistant systems.
What's next for CIPHER
Next, we plan to expand Cipher beyond browsers into full device-level monitoring, mobile support, voice-based AI parenting assistance, and community safety insights for schools and NGOs. Our long-term vision is to make Cipher a universal digital parenting ecosystem that protects children everywhere.
