CineOps AI — AI Production Intelligence for Filmmakers
Inspiration
Making a film is a creative process, but producing one is also an enormous operational challenge.
A single production can involve hundreds of scenes, actors, crew members, locations, props, equipment, permits, vendors, transportation arrangements, shooting schedules, and budget constraints. A seemingly simple creative decision—such as moving a scene from an indoor restaurant to an outdoor rooftop—can create a chain reaction across lighting, sound, permits, weather, transportation, scheduling, continuity, and cost.
Large production houses have experienced teams and specialized systems to manage this complexity, but even they struggle with information scattered across scripts, spreadsheets, emails, call sheets, production-management systems, and conversations.
Independent filmmakers and production teams in smaller film industries face an even bigger challenge. They often deal with many of the same production decisions with fewer people, smaller budgets, and less access to specialized production resources.
We asked ourselves:
What if a producer or director had an AI-powered production control tower that could understand the screenplay, research the outside world, identify risks, and explain how every creative decision could affect the production?
That idea became CineOps AI.
What it does
CineOps AI is an AI Production Intelligence Platform designed to help filmmakers turn creative decisions into actionable production plans.
A producer can upload a screenplay, and CineOps AI uses AI to transform the script into structured production intelligence.
It identifies information such as:
- Scenes and shooting requirements
- Characters and cast dependencies
- Locations
- Props
- Wardrobe requirements
- Equipment
- Day/night requirements
- Production complexity
- Potential scheduling dependencies
CineOps AI then creates a production-level view of the project rather than treating the screenplay as simply a document.
The platform's most important capability is change-impact analysis.
Imagine that three days before filming, a director decides:
Move Scene 48 from an indoor restaurant to an outdoor rooftop at night.
CineOps AI analyzes the decision and identifies potential downstream effects:
Location → permits → weather → lighting → sound → equipment → crew → schedule → continuity → budget.
Instead of different production departments discovering those consequences independently, CineOps AI gives the producer an immediate risk and impact assessment.
CineOps AI can also use live web intelligence to research real-world production questions.
For example:
Find alternative locations for this scene with lower production costs.
The platform can research locations, production services, regulations, vendors, travel considerations, and other external information and combine those findings with the project's existing production constraints.
CineOps AI can then recommend alternatives based on factors such as cost, schedule, resources, and production risk.
This creates what we think of as a:
🎬 Production Control Tower
The system doesn't try to replace producers or directors.
It gives them better information so they can make creative decisions while understanding their operational consequences.
How we built it
CineOps AI combines several technologies, with each one serving a specific purpose.
Google Gemini — The Intelligence Layer
Google Gemini provides the core reasoning and multimodal intelligence.
Gemini analyzes screenplay content and converts unstructured creative material into structured production information.
It also powers production reasoning, including:
- Script analysis
- Scene decomposition
- Production requirements
- Risk identification
- Change-impact analysis
- Production recommendations
- Natural-language interaction
Gemini effectively answers:
"What does this creative decision mean for the production?"
Parallel — The External Intelligence Layer
A production doesn't exist in isolation.
Locations, vendors, regulations, transportation, production services, and other real-world factors can change continuously.
We use Parallel to give CineOps AI access to live web research.
Parallel can research questions such as:
- What locations could work for this scene?
- What filming restrictions might apply?
- What production services exist nearby?
- What alternatives could reduce travel costs?
- What external factors could introduce production risk?
Gemini can then reason over those findings in the context of the existing production plan.
The combination is important:
Gemini understands the production. Parallel understands what is happening outside the production.
IBM Bob — The AI Engineering Partner
We use IBM Bob as an AI software-engineering partner throughout development.
Instead of using AI only for code completion, we use Bob across the software-development lifecycle to help:
- Understand the repository
- Plan implementation work
- Generate application components
- Refactor code
- Implement APIs
- Debug problems
- Create tests
- Improve documentation
- Instrument services
This allowed us to experiment with an agentic development workflow where AI participates in planning, implementation, testing, and improvement.
Replit — Rapid Development and Deployment
We use Replit to rapidly develop, integrate, run, and demonstrate the application.
For a hackathon, speed matters.
Replit allows us to move quickly from an idea to a working application while keeping the development and deployment workflow lightweight.
Clickable — Product Experience
We use Clickable to rapidly explore and prototype the user experience for producers and directors.
Film-production software can easily become overwhelming because of the amount of information involved.
Our goal is to surface complexity only when it matters.
The interface focuses on production health, upcoming shoots, risks, recommendations, budget impact, schedule impact, and AI-assisted decision making.
OpenTelemetry + Grafana — Production Observability
We wanted observability to mean more than monitoring CPU and memory.
CineOps AI uses OpenTelemetry and Grafana to observe both the software system and the movie production itself.
Technical telemetry can include:
- API latency
- Gemini response time
- AI request failures
- Database latency
- Processing duration
- Agent activity
But we also model production telemetry:
- Budget variance
- Schedule risk
- Scenes completed
- Shooting delays
- Location risks
- Actor conflicts
- Equipment conflicts
- AI recommendations
- Estimated financial exposure
This turns Grafana into something more interesting than an infrastructure dashboard.
It becomes part of the Production Control Tower.
Our technology philosophy can be summarized simply:
Gemini thinks. Parallel researches. Bob builds. Clickable designs. Replit runs. OpenTelemetry measures. Grafana observes.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was defining the boundary between AI reasoning and deterministic production data.
Film production contains both.
AI is excellent at understanding screenplay context and identifying potential dependencies, but information such as budgets, shooting dates, actor availability, and equipment inventory must remain structured and auditable.
We therefore designed CineOps AI so that AI augments the production model rather than becoming the production database.
Another challenge was controlling the scope.
Film production is enormous. Scheduling, budgeting, casting, locations, permits, equipment, continuity, VFX, post-production, distribution, and marketing could each become separate products.
For the hackathon, we deliberately focused on a powerful core workflow:
Screenplay → Production Plan → External Research → Change → Impact Analysis → Recommendation
Observability created another interesting challenge.
Traditional observability asks:
"Is the application healthy?"
CineOps AI also needs to ask:
"Is the production healthy?"
That required us to think about film-production events as measurable telemetry rather than simply database records.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're particularly proud that CineOps AI is not simply another chatbot wrapped around an LLM.
The project combines structured production data, generative AI, live external research, agentic software development, and observability into one workflow.
We're also proud of the change-impact concept.
A producer shouldn't have to ask ten departments individually what happens when a scene changes.
CineOps AI attempts to reason across those dependencies and surface the consequences before they become expensive problems.
Another accomplishment is our approach to observability.
By treating production risks, schedule changes, budget variance, and resource conflicts as observable events, we can provide filmmakers with a continuously evolving picture of production health.
Most importantly, we designed CineOps AI to support—not replace—the people making the film.
Creative decisions remain human decisions.
AI provides the intelligence surrounding those decisions.
What we learned
Building CineOps AI changed how we thought about AI applications.
The most valuable AI systems aren't necessarily those that generate the most content.
Sometimes the biggest value comes from understanding relationships and consequences.
We also learned that different AI technologies are strongest when they have clearly defined responsibilities.
Gemini is powerful for reasoning over production information.
Parallel brings current external information into that reasoning process.
IBM Bob demonstrates how agentic AI can accelerate the engineering process itself.
Grafana and OpenTelemetry make both the AI system and production workflow observable.
Together, they create something more useful than any individual component.
We also learned that filmmaking is fundamentally a dependency-management problem wrapped around a creative process.
A screenplay describes the story.
A production plan describes everything that must happen to make that story real.
CineOps AI attempts to connect those two worlds.
What's next for CineOps AI
Our long-term vision is to evolve CineOps AI from a production-planning assistant into an intelligent operating system for film production.
One major next step is AI scheduling optimization.
CineOps AI could continuously optimize shooting schedules around actor availability, locations, equipment, travel, weather, crew requirements, and budget.
Another major area is computer vision for continuity.
Production photos or footage could be analyzed to detect potential differences between takes, including:
- Prop placement
- Wardrobe
- Actor positioning
- Set configuration
- Visual continuity
We also want to develop specialized production agents:
Script Agent — understands screenplay changes.
Scheduling Agent — optimizes shooting plans.
Budget Agent — evaluates financial impact.
Location Agent — researches and evaluates filming locations.
Risk Agent — continuously identifies production risks.
Continuity Agent — uses computer vision to identify visual inconsistencies.
Production Coordinator Agent — turns decisions into actionable production tasks.
Eventually, CineOps AI could continuously monitor external conditions and warn production teams when something changes that could affect an upcoming shoot.
Our broader goal is especially important for independent filmmakers and emerging film industries.
Large studios can afford extensive production-management organizations.
Smaller teams often cannot.
We want CineOps AI to make sophisticated production intelligence accessible to filmmakers regardless of the size of their studio, team, country, or budget.
Great filmmaking should depend on creativity—not on how many spreadsheets a production team can manage.
