Inspiration

Choosing a movie for a family or group movie night can take longer than watching the trailer itself. People often browse endlessly without finding something that matches their mood or interests.

CineMind AI was created to make movie discovery simpler, faster, and more enjoyable through a TV-friendly recommendation experience.

What it does

CineMind AI helps users discover movies based on their preferences and mood. Users can select a category, describe what they feel like watching, and explore recommended movie cards in a cinematic interface.

Key features include:

  • Personalized discovery: Find recommendations based on a user's preferences.
  • Simple, TV-friendly interface: A cinematic dark theme with readable content and clear controls.
  • Remote-friendly navigation: Keyboard navigation has been tested in the browser as an initial step toward a TV experience.
  • Recommendation API: A Node.js backend processes requests and returns movie recommendations to the Angular frontend.

How we built it

The frontend was built using Angular, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS. A Node.js backend exposes a REST API that returns recommendation results, which the frontend displays as movie cards.

The application is organized into separate frontend and backend components to make future enhancements and integrations easier. The source code and setup instructions are available in the linked GitHub repository.

Challenges and learnings

One challenge was ensuring that recommendations appeared reliably after the user clicked the action button. I tested the API response, verified that the frontend received the results, and improved the experience so the page scrolls to the recommendations once they are ready.

I also tested keyboard focus, category selection, and navigation through recommendation cards in Chrome. This helped me understand the importance of clear focus states and predictable navigation for a TV-oriented interface.

What's next

The next steps are to validate the application on Fire OS or Vega OS, improve the recommendation intelligence, and test the experience in the target TV environment.

CineMind AI is currently a working local web prototype. Fire TV/Vega OS runtime compatibility and platform-specific testing are still pending.
