Inspiration
The project was inspired by the need for a transparent and recruiter‑friendly way to showcase continuous integration and deployment workflows. While many teams rely on GitHub Actions, the results are often hidden in logs. I wanted to build a lightweight dashboard that makes pipeline runs visible, professional, and easy to interpret.
What it does
CI/CD Monitor fetches workflow run details from GitHub Actions and displays them in a structured dashboard. It shows run IDs, status, conclusions, and timestamps, helping developers and recruiters quickly assess project reliability. The system also integrates proctoring features, analytics, and certificate generation to align with academic and industry expectations.
How we built it
The platform was built using a full‑stack approach:
- Backend: Node.js with MongoDB schemas for exams and workflow data.
- Frontend: React for the dashboard UI, styled for clarity and recruiter appeal.
- Deployment: AWS for backend services and Netlify/Vercel for frontend hosting.
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions workflows configured to run tests, builds, and deployments automatically.
Challenges we ran into
- Debugging schema mismatches and blank screen errors during UI development.
- Handling push protection when secrets were accidentally committed.
- Ensuring scalability and robustness for real‑world exam scenarios.
- Aligning documentation with recruiter expectations while keeping technical accuracy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a robust, cloud‑deployed system that is portfolio‑ready.
- Designed a dashboard that clearly communicates workflow health.
- Integrated proctoring and analytics features beyond basic CI/CD.
- Produced detailed documentation and user manuals for academic submission.
What we learned
- The importance of secure handling of environment variables and secrets.
- How to structure CI/CD pipelines for clarity and recruiter visibility.
- The value of detailed documentation in making technical work accessible.
- Advanced debugging strategies for frontend and backend integration.
What's next for CI/CD Monitor
- Adding predictive analytics to forecast workflow success rates.
- Expanding dashboard features with role‑based access and exportable reports.
- Enhancing proctoring with AI‑based cheating detection.
- Preparing the system for hackathons, recruiter demos, and academic showcases.
