WriteCraft: AI-Assisted Collaborative Writing Platform
What Inspired This Project
As a writer, I've always struggled with the dreaded blank page syndrome. The idea came from wanting to bridge the gap between AI assistance and authentic human creativity. Instead of AI replacing writers, what if it could provide intelligent scaffolding that writers progressively replace with their own voice? This creates a collaborative relationship where AI jumpstarts the creative process, but humans retain full creative control.
What I Learned
Building this project taught me several key lessons:
- AI Integration Strategy: Learning to design AI assistance that empowers rather than replaces human creativity
- React State Management: Managing complex progress tracking across multiple writing categories and user sessions
- Supabase Integration: Implementing real-time database operations for user authentication and content persistence
- Progress Visualization: Creating intuitive UI indicators that motivate writers to reach 100% completion
- Production Deployment: Debugging component import issues when moving from development to production builds
How I Built It
Technical Stack
- Frontend: React (built in bolt.new environment)
- Backend: Supabase for authentication and data persistence
- Deployment: Netlify for hosting
- AI Integration: Custom placeholder generation system
Architecture Overview
// Core concept: Track AI vs Human content
const trackProgress = (content) => {
const aiPlaceholders = content.filter(item => item.type === 'ai_placeholder');
const humanContent = content.filter(item => item.type === 'human_written');
return (humanContent.length / (aiPlaceholders.length + humanContent.length)) * 100;
};
Key Features Implemented
- Intelligent Placeholder System: AI generates contextually appropriate placeholders across different writing categories (character development, plot points, dialogue, scene descriptions)
- Progressive Replacement Workflow: Writers can replace AI content piece by piece while maintaining document structure
- Real-time Progress Tracking: Visual indicators show completion percentage and category-specific progress
- Multi-format Support: Designed for both novels and screenplays with appropriate formatting
Challenges I Faced
1. Component Architecture Complexity
Managing the relationship between AI-generated placeholders and human replacements required careful state management. Each piece of content needed to track its origin, category, and replacement status.
2. Production Deployment Issues
Encountered a critical ReferenceError: Film is not defined when deploying to Netlify. This highlighted the importance of proper component imports and case-sensitive file naming in production environments.
# Error encountered in production
ReferenceError: Film is not defined
# Solution: Fixed component import paths and exports
3. Progress Calculation Logic
Creating an accurate progress tracking system that works across different content types and writing styles proved more complex than initially anticipated. The algorithm needed to account for varying placeholder lengths and importance weights.
4. User Experience Design
Balancing AI assistance with human agency required careful UX design. The interface needed to clearly show what was AI-generated vs. human-written without overwhelming the writer.
What Makes This Special
WriteCraft takes a unique approach to AI-assisted writing by:
- Maintaining Human Agency: Writers retain complete creative control while getting structural support
- Gamifying the Process: The 100% completion goal creates a satisfying progression system
- Category-Based Organization: Breaking down writing into manageable, trackable components
- Collaborative Philosophy: AI and human creativity working together rather than in competition
Current Status
The application is currently in beta with core functionality implemented:
- ✅ User authentication and project management
- ✅ AI placeholder generation across multiple categories
- ✅ Progressive replacement workflow
- ✅ Real-time progress tracking
- 🔄 Screenplay formatting (currently debugging production deployment)
- 📋 Novel export features (planned for full release)
Future Vision
This hackathon prototype demonstrates the potential for a new paradigm in writing assistance - one where technology amplifies human creativity rather than replacing it. The next phase would include collaborative features, advanced export options, and genre-specific templates.
Try the beta version and experience the future of collaborative writing!
