Inspiration

As a team of developers with extensive experience building Jira Cloud apps, we understood the challenges of managing budgets within Jira. Project budgets often become an afterthought, with tracking happening too late, which leads to missed opportunities for adjustments. From our own experience, we saw the need for a tool that would allow real-time budget management, integrating seamlessly with Jira’s time tracking features.

Chronova was born out of this realization, designed to offer complete flexibility in how teams manage budgets. Rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, Chronova adapts to your specific needs. Whether you want automated, less hands-on management or a more detailed, strict budget control, Chronova provides the tools to create a budgeting approach that suits each project and team. This flexibility allows project managers to adjust the app’s capabilities to simplify or customize their budget management experience based on the scope and complexity of the project.

What it does

Chronova brings budget management right into Jira, making it easy to stay on top of your project’s finances in real time. By building on Jira’s existing time tracking features, including Tempo, we’ve created a system that gives you the control you need, without the overwhelm. Here’s how it works:

  • Set custom budget rules that fit your team’s style—whether you prefer automated, flexible tracking or a stricter approach for more control.
  • Receive proactive alerts that notify you when things are going off track, so you can make adjustments early on and avoid surprises.
  • Track expenses in real-time, with your project budget always in sync with time logged, ensuring that costs reflect the work being done.
  • Dive into reports and analytics that help you spot spending trends, predict future costs, and adjust budgets as needed.
  • Keep detailed logs of all budget-related changes, giving you a clear view of who made updates and when, keeping everything transparent and accountable. Chronova is designed to work the way you need it to—whether you prefer to let it run on autopilot or you’re managing every penny down to the last detail, Chronova provides the flexibility to adjust to your team’s specific needs.

How we built it

Drawing on our experience with Jira Cloud apps, we built Chronova on the Atlassian Forge platform, using the Atlassian Design System for a seamless and secure integration. Forge made it easier to develop and deploy a scalable app while maintaining security and reliability. We integrated several Forge modules, particularly custom fields, to link each Jira issue with its assigned budget, for more precise tracking and management.

We also made sure that Chronova works flawlessly with Tempo, one of Jira’s leading time tracking tools. Chronova’s real-time data syncs with time entries, ensuring that project costs are accurately represented as work is logged. Throughout development, we had close interactions with the Forge dev team, participating in 1:1 discussions at Atlassian events and working through tickets to ensure Chronova leverages the best and latest Forge features.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was the rapid pace of Forge's development. With new features and modules being released frequently, we had to stay agile to integrate these advancements quickly. This required a high level of velocity in development to ensure that Chronova could keep up with and make the most of the new capabilities Forge offered. Balancing this speed with stability and usability was a rewarding challenge, and we’re excited to continue adapting Chronova as Forge evolves.

What we learned

Developing Chronova taught us the importance of customization and flexibility in project management tools. We learned that teams have different needs when it comes to budget management, and the key to a successful tool is the ability to adapt to those needs without overwhelming users.

What's next for Chronova - Automated Budgeting for Jira

Looking ahead, we plan to further enhance Chronova’s analytics capabilities to give teams even deeper insights into spending trends. We are also focusing on expanding integrations with other Jira tools to make Chronova even more versatile and user-friendly. Our long-term vision is to make Chronova the most trusted and customizable budgeting solution for Jira, providing project managers with the tools they need to confidently control budgets and avoid costly surprises.
