Chronos

What Inspired Us

We found our inspiration in a universal frustration: the "time trance". Have you ever started studying, taken a "quick" phone break, and suddenly realized hours had vanished, leaving you utterly exhausted? We wanted to understand why this happens.

Our research led us to Chronoception — the complex psychological and neurological sense that dictates how our brains perceive the passing of time. We realized that if we could track this invisible sense, we could essentially give people a real-life Time Stone (much like Doctor Strange!) to understand and control their perception of time and improve quality of life.

What It Does

Chronos is a real-time time perception companion that transforms invisible cognitive signals into actionable, personalized guidance. At its core, the app continuously monitors and classifies the user's mental state into one of three time perception states:

  • 🐇 The Hare — a high-focus flow state where time accelerates and disappears
  • 🦆 The Duck — a medium-focus state where effort is present but sustainable; calm on the surface and paddling underneath
  • 🐢 The Tortoise — a low-focus state of boredom or dread where time slows, drags, or feels heavy

Using biometric data streamed from the EarSeed EEG wearable — brainwave activity, heart rate variability, electrodermal activity, and movement — Chronos builds a living 24-hour map of how the user actually experiences their day. Not how they planned it. Not how they wish it went. How it actually felt, moment to moment.

The app surfaces three core experiences:

The Daily Arc — a radial 24-hour visualizer showing which hours were spent in which state, overlaid with physiological signals like hydration, cognitive load, and blood sugar. Users can see at a glance where their time went and what their body was doing when it went there.

Personalized Insights — pattern-based observations delivered in plain, warm language. The app identifies the user's peak flow windows, their recurring dread triggers, their post-lunch energy dips, and their best environments for deep work. Insights are never generic — they are derived from the user's own data and updated as patterns evolve.

Smart Interventions — proactive nudges that respect the user's current state. During a Hare state, Chronos protects the window by silencing notifications and guarding the calendar. During a Tortoise state, it suggests a 10-minute reset — a walk, a glass of water, a change of environment. The goal is never to force productivity but to help users work with their natural rhythms rather than against them.

Together, these features address the root cause of the time trance: the gap between how we think we're spending time and how we're actually experiencing it. Chronos closes that gap — and hands the user back their sense of time.

How We Built It

To bring Chronos to life, we designed a speculative, two-part system.

  • The Hardware — We conceptualized an EEG-integrated (EarSeed) wearable designed to continuously capture cognitive biometric data.
  • The Interface — We built a high-fidelity app prototype using Figma and Figma Make that receives this data wirelessly.

By utilizing these states, the app provides real-time, personalized guidance — such as telling you to protect your focus during a Hare state, or suggesting a quick 10-minute walk to reset during a Tortoise state.

The Challenges We Faced

Translating abstract cognitive data into a comprehensive data visualization was one of our central challenges. We had to ensure the data is not only visually appealing, but also easy for users to read, pattern-match, and act on.

Vibe coding in Figma Make presented another significant challenge. Figma Make is powerful and saved us considerable time in designing UI and animation — but there are variables outside our control. Small differences in language, wording, and phrasing caused the design output to shift drastically. Through our process, we learned to use Figma Make more effectively by carefully tracking which prompts, requests, and specific wordings produced the results we wanted.

What We Learned

Ultimately, Chronos taught us that fixing our modern distraction crisis isn't about traditional "time management" — it's about "energy management". By shifting our focus from the clock on the wall to the clock in our minds, we learned how to help users optimize their focus, respect their body's signals for rest, and build genuinely sustainable productivity habits.

What's Next

  • Data Visualization Refinement — The team plans to continuously improve the clarity of data visualizations, conducting user A/B testing to identify the most effective and preferred layouts.
  • Hardware Integration — The next step for the physical device is developing a specialized EEG-integrated wearable that prioritizes being lightweight and ergonomically comfortable without compromising the accuracy of the biometric data it collects.
  • Business Expansion — While currently designed with students in mind, the goal is to scale Chronos to target corporate employees — helping mitigate workplace burnout and improve overall quality of life.
