Inspiration

It stems from my passion of teaching and tutoring which I have carried with me from the age of 13 when I first started as a volunteer in a tutoring center in my hometown. Ever since I've maintained the goal of nurturing however many minds I may encounter, even if that means having ChronOS do that for me.

What it does

ChronOS is a hybrid intelligence learning platform that combines AI companions with multimodal educational experiences. The platform features a vaporwave-inspired VR environment with Windows 95 aesthetics, where learners interact with AI tutors including Clippy Genius agents. It provides adaptive learning paths, emotion-aware tutoring, and seamless integration between desktop and mobile experiences. Students can access personalized learning modules, engage with AI companions for real-time assistance, and track their progress through an intuitive retro-futuristic interface.

How we built it

We built ChronOS using Next.js for the frontend framework, creating a unique blend of modern web technology with nostalgic design elements. The VR experience leverages A-Frame for immersive 3D environments, while the Windows 95 aesthetic is achieved through custom CSS and UI components. We integrated Clippy.js for the Genius agent functionality, implemented a comprehensive state management system for the desktop environment, and created a modular architecture that supports both web and mobile deployment. The backend infrastructure utilizes FastAPI for AI services and includes facial analysis capabilities for emotion-aware learning.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenges included integrating VR components with traditional web frameworks, maintaining consistent state across different UI paradigms, and implementing seamless redirects between static HTML pages and React components. We faced significant hurdles with Next.js routing when trying to serve static HTML files alongside React components, requiring careful architecture decisions to ensure smooth navigation. Additionally, creating the perfect balance between nostalgic Windows 95 aesthetics and modern usability required extensive iteration and user feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm incredibly proud of successfully merging VR technology with retro computing aesthetics to create a unique learning environment. The seamless integration of the original A-Frame VR landing page with Windows 95 functionality represents a significant technical achievement. Our emotion-aware tutoring system, powered by facial analysis, demonstrates the potential of hybrid intelligence in education. Most importantly, we've created a platform that makes advanced AI tutoring accessible through an interface that feels both familiar and futuristic, reducing the cognitive barrier to adopting new educational technologies.

What we learned

Throughout this journey, we learned that the most effective educational technology bridges the gap between innovation and accessibility. We discovered that nostalgic design elements can create emotional connections that enhance learning engagement. The technical challenges taught us valuable lessons about framework limitations and creative problem-solving. We also gained insights into the importance of user experience design in educational platforms, learning that students respond best to interfaces that balance functionality with personality.

What's next for ChronOS

The future of ChronOS includes expanding our AI companion ecosystem with specialized tutors for different subjects, implementing collaborative learning features for group study sessions, and developing advanced analytics for learning pattern recognition. We plan to enhance the VR environment with more interactive elements and gamification features. Additionally, we're working on mobile app deployment to extend the hybrid intelligence experience beyond desktop environments. Our roadmap includes integration with popular learning management systems and the development of teacher dashboards for monitoring student progress in real-time.
