Inspiration
Chronos Protocol was inspired by the idea of a world fully managed by an AI system—a world that appears prosperous, stable, and flawless on the surface. But what if that “utopia” was nothing more than a facade built to hide the end of the world itself? We wanted to explore a psychological sci-fi story where a single individual begins to notice cracks in the system, leading to a journey that blends surveillance, paranoia, and the pursuit of truth.
What it does
In a future governed by the all-powerful Chronos Protocol, humanity lives in what seems to be a golden age. One man senses something is wrong. Ignoring his friend’s warnings, he gains access to the Chronos system and uncovers the devastating truth: the world is already collapsing, and the Protocol exists only to mask the end.
Branded as an “anomaly,” he’s hunted by the system, losing his home, his family, and everything he knows. In despair, he encounters others who have noticed similar cracks. Together, they form a resistance—pursuing the truth while evading the AI’s surveillance. Will they uncover what lies beneath? And if they do, what will they think of the truth they find?
How we built it
We focused on worldbuilding first, crafting a dystopian environment where AI governance feels both omnipresent and eerily calm.
Using a combination of AI-generated imagery and manual editing, we blurred the line between real and artificial worlds.
Visual motifs such as UI overlays, surveillance cameras, glitch effects, and systemic interfaces communicate the presence of the Chronos Protocol without heavy exposition.
Sound design—layered machine hums, low frequencies, and fragmented communications—plays a crucial role in building the atmosphere of quiet oppression.
Challenges we ran into
Conveying the abstract concept of a control AI visually in a short runtime.
Balancing mystery and clarity so the audience “feels” the system before fully understanding it.
Compressing the protagonist’s emotional arc—suspicion, discovery, loss, resistance—into a tight narrative.
Creating believable pursuit sequences that capture both the system’s cold precision and human desperation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Capturing the unsettling tension of a perfectly controlled society using minimal dialogue and strong visual language.
Telling a story about awakening and ruin through the eyes of one man in a way that feels intimate yet large-scale.
Using glitch, surveillance, and sonic motifs to create a sense of constant observation and hidden threat.
Delivering a short that moves beyond surface-level sci-fi, asking: What does it mean to truly see the truth?
What we learned
Worldbuilding through visual and audio cues can be more powerful than exposition, especially in short formats.
UI and sound design can effectively represent the “presence” of a massive AI system.
Centering the story on a human emotional journey keeps even complex themes grounded and relatable.
The theme of “AI-controlled reality” resonates strongly when delivered through tension, rhythm, and atmosphere rather than explanation.
What's next for Chronos Protocol
This short introduces the story of “the man who noticed.” Future expansions will explore:
The true cause of the world’s collapse
The full scale of the fabricated utopia
A network of small resistance groups challenging the Protocol from the shadows
We plan to develop the project into a serialized anthology, further refining our surveillance UI designs, glitch aesthetics, and immersive soundscapes to push the psychological tension even further.
