Background

Yomitan is a Google extension for the Japanese dictionary. Anki is a flashcard program popular with students learning new languages. There is a Yomitan -> Anki add on makes it easy to add Japanese vocab words to Anki. I wanted a similar extension that can work for all languages, making it easy to "mine" for new vocabulary on the internet. I also wanted the flashcard to include the sentence/context in which you found the word, so you can recall the word better.

How we built it

We used the Anki Connect add on in Anki and the Translator API.

What's next for Chrome To Anki

Using the other APIs to make it easier to make flashcards beyond languages, such as vocab words from reading online textbooks, or screenshotting an image and creating a flashcard out of that.
