Inspiration
Debugging cryptic web errors and tracking down obscure JavaScript issues is a universal pain point for developers. After countless hours spent chasing stack traces and manually searching for solutions, the inspiration for Dark Voir Chrome AI Troubleshooter came from a vision: what if there was an instant AI expert available in every browser tab? The launch of Chrome's Gemini Nano AI presented the perfect opportunity to build a tool that bridges human troubleshooting with real-time, automated assistance—turning every frustrating error into an actionable fix, right in the browser popup.
What it does
Dark Voir Chrome AI Troubleshooter is a Chrome extension that automatically catches console errors, JavaScript bugs, and network failures on any site. With one click, it leverages Chrome’s built-in AI APIs to provide instant explanations, generate code fixes, and guide users step-by-step toward resolutions. Features include:
- A real-time dashboard for status, error, and warning metrics.
- AI-powered issue analysis and automatic fix suggestions.
- A built-in troubleshooting chat for custom help.
- On-page visual diagnostic guides.
- Exportable bug reports to streamline developer workflows.
- All data processing is done locally, protecting user privacy.
How we built it
The extension is implemented entirely in vanilla JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, running on Chrome Manifest V3 architecture for maximum performance and security. Key engineering steps:
- Core logic is distributed across modular scripts (background.js, popup.js, and helpers).
- Errors are detected in real-time using content scripts and stored using Chrome's Storage API.
- Gemini Nano and Chrome’s built-in Prompt, Writer, Rewriter, Summarizer, and Translator APIs drive all AI interactions.
- The UI was designed for clarity and compactness, using custom CSS for a professional, modern look.
- Special attention was given to offline capability and regional AI availability, with graceful fallback behaviors if device AI is unsupported.
Challenges we ran into
a. Region restrictions: Gemini Nano is only available in select regions, so extensive fallback logic and user guidance were needed to ensure value globally—even when AI isn't available. b. Manifest V3 transition: Adapting to the new Chrome extension security and permission model required redesigning many internal processes and communication flows between scripts. c. Multi-modal UI design: Balancing a dense information dashboard with compact, intuitive navigation, and integrating chat functionality. d. AI tuning: Crafting effective prompts and response handling for clear, actionable, and accurate AI-generated fixes and advice. e. Performance and privacy: Ensuring that the extension runs lightweight, processes data entirely locally, and requests only minimal permissions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Seamless integration of all five Chrome Built-in AI APIs for robust issue analysis, fix suggestion, rewriting, summarization, and multilingual support.
- A crisp, user-friendly design that delivers both real-time metrics and deep AI analysis in a tiny popup.
- Built a generalized troubleshooting tool that works on any web app, with 100% on-device processing—no external servers.
- Developed comprehensive fallback mechanisms for non-AI regions, ensuring the extension is always useful.
- Established clean, modular code ready for open-source collaboration and future expansion.
What we learned
- Deep practical knowledge of Chrome's Manifest V3, permissions, and messaging.
- Prompt engineering skills to optimize Gemini Nano responses for debugging and code analysis contexts.
- Methods for blending classic client-side debugging with AI-driven tooling, expanding developer productivity.
- Strategies for onboarding users to bleeding-edge browser features, and creating resilient UX when APIs are unavailable.
What's next for Chrome AI Troubleshooter
As an early-stage and experimental tool, Chrome AI Troubleshooter is actively seeking user feedback and aiming for seamless improvement. The next priorities are to fully integrate with Gemini Nano as Chrome expands support, enhance compatibility with framework-specific errors like React, Angular, and Vue, and add continuous background monitoring with auto-alerts for critical issues. Planned updates also include team collaboration features, streamlined onboarding for new AI regions, and a polished release for the Chrome Web Store. Continued testing and user guidance will shape each new version so the extension becomes an essential productivity aid for web developers everywhere.
