💡 Inspiration

ChromaticAid was conceived from a deep desire to make the digital world more inclusive and accessible. The inspiration for this project struck during a conversation with a close friend who is color-blind. We were deeply moved by the daily frustration and limitations he encountered while navigating the internet, particularly when it came to images and visual content. This encounter ignited a spark to create a solution that could enrich the online experiences of individuals with color vision deficiencies. The vision was to make the digital world more vibrant and inclusive for all.

📋 Stats and Problems Faced by Color-Blind People:

1.Prevalence: Color blindness affects approximately 8% of men and 0.5% of women worldwide.

2.Color-Dependent Information: Color-coded charts, maps, and graphs can be challenging for color-blind individuals to interpret, potentially leading to misunderstandings.

3.Limited Career Options: Certain professions, such as graphic design and electrical wiring, may be less accessible due to color vision deficiencies.

4.Daily Challenges: Everyday tasks like reading traffic signals, identifying ripe fruits, or distinguishing between clothing can be problematic.

⚙️ What it does

ChromaticAid is a Google Chrome extension designed to enhance the online experience of color-blind individuals by transforming digital images to make them more distinguishable, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in the digital world. Users can customize the extension to suit their specific needs, enabling them to engage with web content more effectively and without the limitations of color vision deficiencies.

📐 How we built it

The project's foundation lay in comprehensive research on color blindness and the available accessibility tools. We meticulously designed the architecture of ChromaticAid, employing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the user interface. The heart of the project, the image processing algorithms, was meticulously developed to transform images in a way that made them more distinguishable to individuals with color vision deficiencies while preserving the original context and aesthetics. Extensive testing and iterative refinement were essential to fine-tune the extension to ensure it genuinely delivered meaningful benefits to its users.

⚠️ Challenges we ran into

The development of ChromaticAid posed two major challenges: the creation of an algorithm capable of effectively enhancing image distinguishability for color-blind users while preserving original meaning, which demanded iterative experimentation and ensuring compliance with web accessibility standards and addressing potential privacy concerns, as image processing raised questions about data security and user privacy.

🎖️ Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Empowering color-blind individuals to access and enjoy online content more easily.
  2. Developing effective image processing algorithms that maintain original image context.
  3. Providing customization for a personalized user experience.
  4. Ensuring compliance with web accessibility standards and addressing privacy concerns.

🧑‍💻 What we learned

The journey of developing ChromaticAid was a profound learning experience. We immersed ourselves in understanding the intricacies of color vision deficiencies, delving into the various types and their impact on individuals. It was also a journey of discovery regarding the vast realm of web accessibility. We explored the principles, guidelines, and best practices for ensuring that online content is usable by all, regardless of their abilities. Additionally, we ventured into the technical aspects of Chrome extension development, a field that was previously unfamiliar to us.

🚀 What's next for ChromaticAid

  1. Advanced Customization: We're expanding customization options and algorithms to better cater to various types of color blindness and individual preferences.

  2. Cross-Browser Support: Our goal is to make ChromaticAaid available on multiple browsers to reach a broader user base.

  3. User-Centric Development: We will continue to engage with users, gather feedback, and prioritize features and improvements based on their needs and insights.
