Inspiration
Both Melissa's and Lily's families are impacted by red-green colorblindness. Something that we tend to hear a lot from our family members is how some websites are difficult in terms of distinguishing text color from other elements, so we wanted to design a one-click extension to make the web browsing experience easier for those who are affected by this condition.
What it does
This extension can be enabled on any webpage and will change the colors of the text, hyperlinks, and background to have more contrast, allowing people who are affected by red-green colorblindness to have an easier browsing experience.
How we built it
We created a manifest.json file for the Chrome Extension in JavaScript, which contains the manifest version, the name of the extension, the version of the extension itself, the description, and all of the logic for the JavaScript files. We then created .js files that contain the function for the colors to change when the button is clicked. We also created a webpage with info about our project, pictures of our examples, and info about our team and backgrounds.
Challenges we ran into
We do not have extensive coding experience (one of us has only been learning for the past 6 weeks) and this is our first time ever working on a project like this, so determining how to go about each step of the process was a learning experience for all 3 of us. We claimed the domain chromacorrect.tech, but had issues with connecting the domain to a hosting platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Finishing our first project and hackathon together! We also learned how to create a Chrome extension, which we had never done before.
What we learned
We learned how to problem solve under tight time constraints, and also the process of creating an extension for Google Chrome.
What's next for ChromaCorrect
We would like to eventually find a way to adjust the colors in images, especially since images are a very important part of the browsing experience. We would also ideally create a color pallete for each type of color blindness that will be suited to their needs. Users would then be able to switch between the filter options and be able to choose the one that they like best.
