Inspiration

At Chority, we are a group consisting of four first-year international students who are compassionate about finance, problem solving and challenging the status quo. Being the first in our families to be abroad, we faced multiple challenges when it came to making monetary decisions in daily life. Together, we all wished that we were better equipped with financial literacy, especially the understanding of dynamics between working and earning. And as brothers and sisters, we also aim to educate our younger siblings on financial lessons, hence increasing their life readiness skills. Bearing that mission in mind, we create Chority - a vibrant and interactive website for families to shed light on wealth management at a young age for children and empower parents to build their kids long-lasting good habits for chore doings and money spendings. More importantly, “Chority = Chores + Charity”, we not only want to help children being financially literate but also compassion citizens. Giving back to the community is a highlighted feature of Chority as we incorporate many charity sites to raise children’s awareness on their local charity scene and to inspire them with the spirit of helping others.

What it does

Chority is a website for parents to assign their children chores to complete with monetary awards. Then there is on-web credit earned by children to make purchases for already-picked buying lists made by parents. With the web assist and parents guidance, children can build a habit of doing chores regularly and voluntarily. And with their earned credit, children can choose goods they love on our pre-made shopping list, then purchase is made with the consent of parents to build a good money spending habit. While making the purchases, suggestions for donating and charity causes will pop up as a way to inspire children to give back to their community; and the long-term effect we hope to achieve is that not only will they value their hard work earned money but also gain a meaningful value out of it.

How we built it

As first-year computer science students who are relatively new to the coding scene, we leverage Figma as our platform to build the front end for the website. From making colorful designs to eye-catching layout, we take inspiration from multiple sites and mood boards online. Then by using the HTML and Express we learn while doing the hackathon, we hope to build the final product as much as we can.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered numerous challenges as first time hackathon participants. It was extremely difficult for us to first figure out how to host a domain name within a short period of time as we plan to get that at the end of our coding. That leads to a series of unfortunate events that prevent us from incorporating our back-end coding to websites as we couldn’t record the user data without having a hosting for our web domain.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we have made time for this event, and together we overcome the insecurity of knowing less and peer pressure to join this HackCWRU. We were able to learn a lot, especially the art of scaling your product down within a very short given time both for learning and coding. We created our own workflow and gained confidence in joining many hackathons to come.

What we learned

We learned about numerous sites and tools to work with websites. Figma is outstandingly one of them. We were able to gather and hone our designing and team-working skills. Besides, the brainstorming sessions also open us to reflect the values and what we care for. The further in the project, domain name and hosting server are the topics that we spent a considerable amount of time to get the hang of. We then know how to create and host a static website on GitHub which is very helpful.

What's next for Chority

Though it’s very patchy right now, Chority bears the mission we believe in doing and realizing. It definitely needs to be able to perform the proposed tasks in the near future and incorporate users into making it. While it is not a website now, we strongly believe that with this prototype, people like us, who are still afraid of getting out of their comfort zone, have a chance to immerse themselves in the fun and challenge of coding. In short, Chority is our first step into making practical coding and will not be the last one! We will get back see you HacKCWRu2023!!!
