Inspiration

As music lovers ourselves and musicians, the inspiration for Chordfolio comes from the challenges faced by both fans and artists. Fans want meaningful ways to support their favorite musicians but often feel disconnected due to a lack of transparency and accessibility. On the other hand, emerging artists struggle to gain visibility and secure funding early in their careers. Chordfolio bridges this gap, turning the traditional concept of the stock market into a platform for empowering fans and artists alike.

What it does

Chordfolio allows fans to invest in their favorite artists by purchasing “stocks” tied to the artist’s performance metrics, such as streams, social mentions, playlist adds, and ticket sales. Fans can track their investments, monitor an artist's growth, and see how their contributions directly support the artist's career. For artists, Chordfolio provides a transparent, engaging way to fund their projects, connect with fans, and grow their audience.

How we built it

Frontend: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an interactive, user-friendly interface. Backend: Python for processing artist metrics and calculating stock prices based on weighted formulas. APIs: Leveraging the Spotify API and web scraping tools like Selenium and Beautiful Soup to gather real-time data on artist performance. Data Visualization: Python libraries such as Matplotlib for creating graphs to show trends and portfolio performance. Design: A minimalist UI with a focus on accessibility and aesthetic alignment with music culture.

Challenges we ran into

Data Accuracy: Ensuring real-time and reliable data from APIs and scraping tools was challenging, especially when platforms updated their layouts or APIs had rate limits. Transparency: Designing a system that clearly explains how metrics influence stock prices required balancing simplicity with accuracy. Engagement: Ensuring the platform remains engaging for both superfans and casual listeners was a key design challenge. Integrations: Integrating multiple data sources and APIs smoothly into one unified backend.

What we learned

Data Integration: The importance of reliable APIs and how to handle rate limits, changes, or inconsistencies in external data. User Needs: Understanding the desires and pain points of both fans and artists helped refine our approach to transparency and impact. Technical Growth: Gaining experience in Python for backend calculations, frontend design, and using APIs to power real-time applications.

What's next for Chordfolio

Our next big step is forging partnerships with musicians to bring them directly into the platform. This ensures artists actively participate and benefit financially from fan investments. These collaborations will also enhance authenticity, giving fans the confidence that their investments are genuinely supporting the artists they love. Additionally, we plan to implement secure bank account integration to enable seamless money transfers between users' bank accounts and the platform. This feature will allow fans to invest in artists effortlessly and withdraw returns when desired, making Chordfolio a fully functional investment platform.
