Inspiration
Wanting to make a choice based story that(unlike many others), actually effects the outcome of a character. It is very much similar to Black Mirror's movie bandersnatch.
What it does
Gives a player choices that guide him/her through a spooky story.
How we built it
We used primarily java, with the GUI built in javafx, a free text to speech engine, and AI generated art for the background image. _ Damon Gonzalez _ primarily worked on the GUI and _ Jessica Nguyen _ worked on the backend(or model).
Challenges we ran into
Making things accessible is a lot harder than it initially sounds. We mostly ran into challenges around that aspect of our project because it's not something that is often thought about when creating an application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Incorporating a speech engine successfully is something we're very proud. Even though the speaking voice could be much more pleasant I've never successfully incorporated an API like that before.
What we learned
The ability to look past what you could've done better but would have taken too much time. In these hackathons you can't spend too long on one problem because you have a very short time span to develop your application. If something isn't going as planned you need to find a quick fix and move on. Hopefully you'll get back to it, but if not it's ok because other things were accomplished.
What's next for Choose Your Adventure
Expanding the game to include relevant images for each phase of the story and obtaining a more sonically pleasant text to speech engine(faster too).
