Inspiration
Our group is filled with lighthearted people who care about the environment and animals around us. So we started our project by thinking about how to showcase a pressing social issue into something humorous in order to display the endangered animals.
What it does
Chirpr is an interactive website meant to reflect the status of various endangered species around the world. Through the details of the animals' profiles, we are able to humorously convey the causes for endangerment. The website is formatted as a dating site, and when a species is no longer on considered endangered, they are displayed as found a match.
How we built it
We started this project by researching and producing a draft with all our endangered animals we were going to use. Then added a little code for the website, and mainly focused on the vanity aspect of the website.
Challenges we ran into
Our team has no experiences in website creating or designing. Our number one challenge was to learn the basics of JavaScript and how to navigate the Velo platform. Making the website was a bit difficult because we found that Velo only allows one person to edit the website at a time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Going to hackTAMS for the first time as a team was our initial accomplishment. Starting off this project, we felt very overwhelmed. We were tasked with coming up with an achievable goal within a time restraint, and learning the basics of a new programming language. Overall, we are really proud for completing our project and participating in our first hackathon.
What we learned
Our team is filled with beginners and through this experience we learned how to create a website from scratch. From this project we learned about how human development has deeply misaligned the balance of the animal kingdom. From loss of habitat to loss of genetic variation, poaching, and overfishing, we learned the detailed predicaments of these species.
What's next for Chirpr - Where animal instincts takeover
Chirpr plans to continue monitoring the progress of endangered species, as we as a society work to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly processes to help repair the damage we have caused.
