Inspiration
This was developed at the Starling Bank hackathon (7th-9th April 2017), where they launched access to their bank's open API. Facebook Messenger bot are (currently) a very hot trend, hence a marriage between the two was an obvious step. Security/privacy/authentication is an obvious problem in such a setup, hence became the focus of our hack.
What it does
Chirp uses a helper iOS app to verify the owner of the device via TouchID, allowing us to be confident in the fact that the person interacting with our bot interface for Starling bank is actually authorised to be doing so.
What's next for Chirp
It was an interesting and successful proof of concept, though it became clear for this to be truly viable the Messenger platform need to mature further.
