Inspiration

I must admit that Initially I was inspired by a very popular app called 'Duolingo', as I started progressing on this project it ended up totally different to what they do. Most language apps either lock you into repetitive flashcards or drown you in dry grammar tables that feel like homework. We wanted to build something dynamic, immersive, and structured. ChirPolly was born from a simple goal: create a single, unified language-learning platform covering 11 different languages, complete with a structured 33,000-word curriculum, interactive mini-games like Kanji Liar, and realistic JLPT/CEFR progression pathways.

What it does

ChirPolly is a cross-platform web and mobile language learning application that takes learners from absolute beginner (A1/N5) all the way to fluency (B1/B2/N1).

Key features include:

Multi-Language Curriculum: Comprehensive coverage spanning 11 core languages.

Structured Mastery Tracks: Clear progression mapping CEFR tiers (A1 to B1) directly to Japanese JLPT levels (N5 through N1).

Interactive Learning Engines: Dedicated modules like the Kanji Liar game to reinforce vocabulary retention through active recall.

Flexible Access Model: Tiered plans offering accessible entry levels alongside deep-dive practice tools.

How we built it

Frontend & Architecture: Built as a responsive cross-platform web and mobile app using Flutter, engineered with clean architecture patterns and GoRouter for seamless web URL deep-linking.

Backend & Hosting: Deployed on Firebase Hosting, leveraging Cloud Functions and Firestore for real-time user state synchronization and data persistence.

Development Workflow: Conceptualized and built leveraging Google AI Studio and Google Antigravity, version-controlled via GitHub, and wired up with modern web payment rails via Paddle.

Challenges we ran into

Building a full-scale app solo comes with its share of hurdles:

Web Deep-Linking & Routing: Transitioning complex navigation states on the web required rethinking our client-side routing using GoRouter so that refreshed pages and payment callbacks landed smoothly.

Payment Gateway Compliance & Sandbox Setup: Navigating global Merchant of Record (MoR) setups, cross-border compliance, and multi-currency pricing overrides (USD, EUR, INR) took a lot of trial, error, and sandbox testing. I am yet to fully integrate this feature, I am using Paddle.

Curriculum Alignment: Ensuring the UI text, feature lists, and JLPT/CEFR mappings matched the exact progression rules across every pricing card and curriculum view required relentless attention to detail.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned

Building ChirPolly proved that modern AI-assisted tools and clean cross-platform frameworks let a solo creator build, architect, and ship production-ready software faster than ever. We learned how to handle complex global payment routing, engineer robust deep-linking systems on Flutter Web, and design curricula that keep learners engaged.

What's next for Chirp Polly

Expanding offline mode capabilities for mobile devices.

Scaling community features and competitive learning leaderboards.

Integrating live tutor marketplace tools alongside our core self-paced curriculum.
