Inspiration

I've wanted to build this for a long time. I've used FL Studio and Ableton for years, making 8bit / Chiptune style music.

A few years back I developed from scratch a virtual synth using the web audio API.

I'd always wanted to take it further but lacked the knowledge and capacity to do so.

What it does

It gives the user the option of creating virtual synths and patterns using a sequencer that those synths will play.

When the user is done it allows them to share it along with a customisable visualiser.

It supports local storage or cloud storage with firebase.

How we built it

I wanted to see if I could complete this using only codex. I'd ask codex to write product documents, I'd revise them then I'd ask it to write epics from that product document.

If I was happy I'd ask codex to make the changes and then I'd iterate on what it had produced.

As thing's got more complex I used Claude Design to work on the UI.

Challenges we ran into

Codex often misunderstood what was being asked of it.

Getting the web app online with cloud based auth was really challenging as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Only went and built something I'd been dreaming of making for half a decade now. I am so happy this exists and I'm really excited to build more.

What we learned

Codex sincerely is really great. It's completely changed how I view application development. I feel like we are now at a point where with the right architecture coding can be almost entirely orchestrated and agentic.

What's next for Klinto Studio / Chiptune Workstation

I wanna get it in front of people and see what they think. With that feedback iterate it into something that other people who make chiptune music could use.

I'd really like to be more beginner friendly and have features that could help someone with little knowledge make their own music.

I wanna replace the sequencer with a more standard piano roll but its a bit more complex so it'll take some time.

MIDI input would be great. As would MIDI import/export.
