Inspiration
We aimed to illustrate the vast scale of China's social media presence and identify the most influential accounts in each country. Faced with numerous accounts, distinguishing state actors became challenging.
What it does
Users can click on their chosen region to explore the top social media accounts. Additionally, they have the option to filter by social media platform, enabling them to view accounts with the highest number of followers for a specific platform. Users can see the Twitter,Facebook, and instagram engagement rate. Users can click top 5 or 10 accounts to see how their median engagement rates are doing. Additionally, users can filter accounts based on whether they are state-controlled or not. Finally, we have created a dendogram to show the distribution of social media followers and the engagement for each entity owners
Formula used for engagement:
engagement rate=( likes+comments+shares/followers)*100 for twitter and facebook
engagement rate=( likes+comments/followers)*100 for instagram
How we built it
We developed an automated Twitter-scraper that securely and automatically logs-in, scrapes the engagement information and got the state-control information from facebook. We used apify to get facebook, and instagram engagements information
Challenges we ran into
Need to scrape Twitter (X) for data, but there were major limitations with current resources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Scraping Twitter data efficiently is not a simple task, so we are proud of the progress we were able to make in such a short time.
What we learned
Be simple in our approach and yet be effective
