Inspiration
As college students, we are aware of how overwhelming day-to-day life can be. We know both from scientific research and from personal experience how beneficial it can be to take a mindful perspective and appreciate the good in every day. We really just want to make mindfulness a routine for the greatest number of people.
What it does
We developed an app that aims to use mindfulness and behavioral therapy to reduce negativity bias by increasing the time thought about positive experiences the user have had in the day. Chime is a guided meditation app with survey questions to help the user to explore what they are feeling. Both the questions and the meditation are short, ranging between 5-15 minutes, so it would be an easy addition to any daily routine. The session would begin with questions about the user’s day to see how they're feeling. Then the meditation session would begin, with the user-guided through positive thinking exercises, and instructed to tap the screen every time they think of something positive. At the same time they tap the screen, a chime (or selected sound effect) will play. After the meditation ends, the screen will ask the user how to identify 3 positive things they thought of. The calendar button on the app will allow them to remind themselves of the positives they have in their life and track their mood at a glance. At times during the day, from between 9 and 9, the same chime will play, reminding the user of the positives in their life as well as reminding them to think positively during their day. The frequency of the chimes will increase in the after 3 days of continual “bad” days answered during their check-in question to further remind them.
How I built it
We utilized Adobe XD to design, format, and display potential functionalities in the app.
Challenges I ran into
Android emulation and react-native compatibility in app development: Our initial attempts reached a dead-end, which is why we switched prototype platforms. Device design process: it took many iterative design cycles to flesh out our final idea, which posed further time constraints.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
During the hackathon, we learned how to utilize Adobe XD to create an app interface prototype from scratch.
What we learned
We learned about how negativity bias influences people’s mindset and its part in emotional disorders. We also learned how to use Adobe XD to create an app interface model.
What's next for Chime
If we further develop Chime, we would add an optional weekly survey so the users can further document their emotions. Additionally, we would like to develop a web platform for people who don’t have access to smartphones.
