Inspiration

Our team thought about the treatment process of a diagnosis when it comes to children. For many, it is mainly the parents that are doing the work, caring for the children and applying treatment options. Parents receive pamphlets or infographics about the diagnosis of their children, and we believe that the children themselves should also be educated on their diagnosis. However, the children themselves are not really part of this process , which can make them feel scared of what is going on, anxious, and general confusion. We offer a solution to this problem by creating an interactive children's "minigame" where the children themselves can be educated by a cartoon character on their diagnosis with simplified terms and definitions, as well as being able to read facts and take quizzes about the steps to take treatment for their diagnosis.

What it does

We created a HTML web page where the user can interact with diffferent elements on the page, which leads you to different options for navigating through. There is a section for parents to read and get a quick run down of general context of their children's diagnosis, as well as an option for the child themself to read about the different aspects of their diagnosis and some quick facts surrounding it. They read these short and simple excerpts to understand their diagnosis and treatment methods or ways to become healthier. After reading these very short excerpts, they are asked a simple multiple choice question about the topic they had just read to gauge their understanding. As they advance through the topics, they can redeem their earned points for stuffed animals and other small toys at their next visit to help them along their journey to a better and healthier life.

How we built it

We used HTML,CSS, and Javascript to create the webpage, as well as some images for the icon elements on the web page so the user themselves can navigate around. Some of the art graphics are hand drawn by our own team members.

Challenges we ran into

This is our first hackathon, and we are here to learn and grow. Only one of our team members have some experience in using HTML to create websites, and so most of this journey is a learning experience for our whole team. We had to figure out how to integrate many elements into the web page to get them working. We have difficulties trying to keep track of the score across multiple different HTML pages.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of our ability to use our resources to pull off this project. As mentioned before, only one out of the five members of our team know some HTML to create websites.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how an HTML document is set up and how each tag is set up to work with each other, as well as CSS styling to make our elements look better on the page. For many of us, it was our first coding experience and working on a project like this, and it was a very fun experience for our first hackathon.
