Inspiration
When it comes to patient care, there's always something that can be improved to make the experience of both staff and patients better. Being in a hospital can be a scary thing to a kid on top of going through whatever medical condition caused them to be there in the first place. That's why we wanted to create a program that could save time and provide ease of mind to everyone through reducing the amount of time it takes to perform smaller tasks.
What it does
The app will have authentication for patients and hospital staff. For patients, the app will serve to show patients and family what staff are working with them. There may be a lot of people working with the same patient, and names and faces can be hard to remember. This gets all the more harder if the patient has a memory condition. The app will show the name, face, title, specialty, and day and time the staff member was in the room with them. For parents, they will be able to send texts to get updates on what is being done with their child. For staff, they will be able to order food for a patient if the patient is unable to.
How we built it
The app was built using Android studio, with Java and Kotlin both being used to design various parts of it, using Firebase as a backend to create sample databases to enter and retrieve data from.
Challenges we ran into
Coordinating file sharing was hard to do since we are all high schoolers not used to working in a highly team-based environment. We spent time discussing with each other such as where to place various files and whether we should use some sort of cloud service such as Jetbrains Space.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall we were proud to be able to coordinate as well as we did in order to create such a feature-rich program in just one weekend, especially coming in with different knowledge sets from each other.
What we learned
In creating this, we learned the struggles of both what it is to work at a hospital and to work as a professional developer designing a new system. Together we taught each other and learned about the things we used in our stack such as Firebase and Android Studio as well as what goes on behind the scenes in a hospital such as the documentation that needs to be filled out and what makes a hospital run.
