Inspiration

Mental health is a global crisis, often overlooked in many regions. The increasing suicide rates, fueled by untreated mental health issues, underscore the urgency of addressing this challenge. In the U.S., a 988 helpline has been established to provide immediate assistance, but such initiatives are not universally available or prioritized. This lack of support inspired us to build C.H.I.K.I.T.S.A, a solution that combines mental health care and emergency response systems to save lives and empower professionals.

Simultaneously, emergency dispatchers—critical first responders during life-threatening situations—often lack up-to-date training, tools, or guidance. Errors in these moments can be catastrophic. We aimed to create a Conversational AI that not only simulates high-pressure emergency scenarios but also supports dispatchers with evidence-based practices.

What it does

C.H.I.K.I.T.S.A is a dual-purpose platform that:

  1. Supports Emergency Dispatchers:

    • Acts as a simulator to train dispatchers for various emergency scenarios.
    • Functions as a feedback engine, analyzing call transcriptions and providing actionable improvements aligned with evidence-based protocols.

  2. Addresses Mental Health Needs:

    • Provides 24/7 mental health support through chatbots and voice assistants.
    • Detects real-time emotions via webcam using Facial Emotion Recognition (FER).
    • Leverages the Gemini API for intelligent, context-aware conversations to assist users in crisis.

How we built it

  • AI Backend: Powered by Python, Flask, and the Gemini API, which enhances conversational capabilities for both emergency and mental health scenarios.
  • Simulation Engine: Custom-built scenarios for emergency dispatcher training, including call analysis and feedback modules.
  • Emotion Detection: Integrated FER models to analyze emotions dynamically during interactions.
  • Mental Health Companion: Designed using NLP and reinforcement learning for personalized assessments, stress relief tools, and guidance.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Balancing Sensitivity and Precision: Ensuring empathetic responses without compromising the accuracy required for life-saving scenarios.
  2. Regulatory Constraints: Adapting features to align with compliance and liability requirements for emergency systems.
  3. Data Diversity: Training FER models and NLP systems to handle diverse cultural, linguistic, and emotional contexts.
  4. Complex Integration: Seamlessly combining the simulation engine, Gemini API, and emotion detection tools.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Winning the Google Gen-AI Exchange Hackathon and gaining recognition from Startup India.
  • Developing a simulator for dispatchers that provides real-time, evidence-based feedback to improve life-saving skills.
  • Successfully integrating FER and Gemini API to make AI interactions both empathetic and effective.
