Chess Puzzle Game for Reddit

Inspiration

I love chess puzzles and I love Reddit. So, I build an interactive chess puzzle game, tailored to user's ELO rating, on Reddit. I build this so people can improve their ELO rating with one chess puzzle game, every day. And, users can also share about the puzzle they played and discuss it with other people on r/chesspuzzlegame subreddit

What it does

• Deliver one daily chess puzzle that's tailored to the user's ELO Rating
• Lets user share the puzzle they got and discuss it with other fellow chess enthusiasts in the subreddit

How we built it

• Everything is build on top of Devvit Web + React.

Challenges we ran into

• At first, the chessvision fen2img API got blocked by Reddit. But, in the end, we choose to create a script that we ran first to create the image in the internal assets folder.
• Our previous iteration is to build a series of puzzles instead of just one per day, but after talking with experienced people, it seems the right move for now is just to create a unique daily puzzle for every user and let the users share their own unique puzzle so people can engage

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Eventhough I'm just starting (haven't launched it publicly), lots of my friends on Reddit are excited about my game.

What we learned

• People (at least my friends) love just one daily chess puzzle (tailored to their ELO) every day instead of lots of puzzles. Will validate with our users later since we're just starting.
• People love to compete with others in puzzle time completion. So, I build a feature for users to share the puzzle they had and other people can try to solve the puzzle + compare their time completion.

What's next for Chess Puzzle Game for Reddit

• Provide user statistic and insights for puzzle they have solved and puzzle they have missed, along with puzzle themes they need to practice more.
• Puzzle-dash game where there is a countdown timer and the game keeps track of how many puzzles a user have solved during the session. The next puzzle has more difficulty than the previous one.
• Business-wise, we can even offer a premium tier where users can freely navigates all the puzzle + they can get a more personalized training & lessons for a puzzle.
