Inspiration
The idea for this project came from my interest in chess and how platforms like Chess.com present player rankings in real time. I wanted to create a lightweight and clean leaderboard that pulls real data from Chess.com and showcases top players in a simple, accessible format.
What it does
This web app fetches and displays the top players from Chess.com's public leaderboards, categorized by game modes such as Blitz, Bullet, and Rapid. It presents this data in a responsive and user-friendly UI that's easy to navigate.
How we built it
The project was built using:
- React for the frontend UI.
- Tailwind CSS for styling and responsive design.
- Chess.com Public API for real-time leaderboard data.
- Netlify for seamless and fast deployment.
I structured the project with modular components and kept the codebase clean and easy to maintain. Data fetching is handled using React hooks and basic error handling for robustness.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges included:
- Parsing and formatting the nested data structure from Chess.com's API.
- Handling empty or missing data cases gracefully.
- Ensuring the UI looks good across different screen sizes.
- Managing loading states and preventing unnecessary re-renders.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully integrating a public API and transforming raw data into a clean visual presentation.
- Building a fully responsive UI from scratch using Tailwind CSS.
- Deploying the app with a fast CI/CD workflow via Netlify and GitHub.
- Creating a smooth user experience with minimal loading times.
What we learned
Throughout this project, I learned:
- How to work with third-party APIs and handle asynchronous data fetching in React.
- Effective use of Tailwind CSS for rapid styling.
- How to organize a React project for scalability.
- Best practices in deployment and version control.
What's next for Chess.com Leaderbroads
In the future, I plan to:
- Add filters or sorting by country or rating.
- Include player profiles with additional statistics.
- Add dark mode support.
- Improve error handling and loading feedback.
- Possibly cache API data to reduce request frequency and improve performance.
This is just the beginning, and I'm excited to continue developing and refining this project!
