Inspiration
my mom is currently going through chemo-therapy, and watching her go through it made me want to build something that could actually help..... not just for her, but for other patiens and families going through the same thing. Its hard to keep track of how you're feeling day to day during chemo, and its even harder to explain that clearly to a doctor during a short appointment. I want to build a system/companion that could make that easier.
What it does
ChemoBuddy is a daily check in and assessment app for chemotherapy patients. After setting up their treatment plan, like age health heart rate, etc. patients complete a short daily assessment covering symptoms like nausea, pain, energy, mood, and more. ChemoBuddy calculates a wellness score, detects which phase of the treatment cycle they are in, these are the cycles/phases: Treatment, Lowest, Recovery, or Productive week , and generates personalized, prioritized recommendations flagging anything urgent, like fever, immediately.
also theres a consult system where you could consult literally anytime anywhere.
How we built it
the app is built with Flask and SQLite, with a custom sessionbased authentication system like PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 password hashing (idk its my first time doing it). I built it using Featherless.ai's Hermes Terminal coding agent sandbox, which let me describe features in plain language and have the agent generate and iterate on the code directly. Sadly i want to make a few changes but im limited by the context span.
Challenges we ran into
yup pretty much first off is running out of AI credits in mid build. My sandboxs own usage ate into my Featherless credit balance faster than expected, which uh blocked both my coding agent and my planned AI integration testing at a pretty bad time.
then also, with 48 hours time, with NO ANY coding skills or even knowledge about coding and ai. I must and have to manage on learning and reading carefully, with the help of claude. I learnt much faster.
then i had a problem with requirement.txt which i spent almost 8 hours figuring out but yeah, i managed to get past that.
and i do it all alone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Im proud that ChemoBuddy works. sign-up, onboarding, daily check-ins, and personalized recommendations, all fully functional. im especially proud i got a real, deployed, working web live despite hitting real problems along the way (credit limits, failed deploys, switching hosting providers). Most of all, this wasnt just a hackathon exercise. It came from a real situation, for real patients like my mom.## What we learned
What's next for ChemoBuddy
Definetly, im going to make it an app, available in playstore for quick access. since i already made it so you could view it in your phone, well mainly purposed on phone for quick access. Yeah, making it an app , i wish i had more credits so i could fix remaining bugs, and then visual trend charts for symptoms and wellness scores over time, or maybe even care team sharing so patients can export their history for doctor visits. Just some day maybe im capable of doing that.
