Chemistry is a study of substances, which consist of atoms. The set of atoms are called molecules, and each atoms are constrained by electrical force, energy, and etc. Visualizing the configuration of molecules under these rules could be challenging even to the chemistry major students. Therefore, we introduce a visualization tool for molecules and these constraints in VR, which helps users understand the concept of organic chemistry even deeper.

What it does

  • Allows users to construct a molecule using major atoms and visualizes the behavior of the molecule using physics simulations in the 3D VR environment.

How we built it

  • We built a VR chemistry molecule simulation app for Samsung Oddesy+ on Unity.
  • First, we figured out the way to simulate the molecule behavior, such as angles and repelling forces, using Unity Physics simulations.
  • Then we implemented the view controller, UI, and interaction, i.g. adding atoms, biding them, zooming, and etc.

Challenges we ran into

  • Using the first 6 hours trying to set up the environment, e.g. installing the drivers and software.
  • Figuring out how to accurately simulate the atomic-level behaviors of molecules in Unity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Producing a product that may largely benefit educators, students, and professionals.
  • Completed the fundamental implementations of the project within 36 hours.

What's next for Chem VR

  • Adding more atoms
  • Research & Chemistry Student uses -> A few more variations of view mode.
  • Entry-level Education uses -> Tutorial and textual explanation of the molecule configurations.
