Chef It Up

Inspiration

Food waste is a significant issue worldwide, and many people often forget about the ingredients sitting in their fridges until it's too late. We wanted to create a solution that would not only help users manage their fridge efficiently but also encourage them to reduce food waste through an interactive and rewarding experience.

What it does

Chef It Up is a mobile app that allows users to store and manage their fridge items. With the help of the Vapi voice assistant, users can easily find recipes that incorporate ingredients they already have, minimizing waste. The app tracks ingredient expiration dates and rewards users with Sui coins from the Sui blockchain when they use items before they expire. Conversely, users lose coins if they let items go bad, creating a gamified experience that motivates better food management.

How we built it

We built Chef It Up using Flutter for the front-end, ensuring a smooth cross-platform experience on both iOS and Android. The fridge inventory is managed using Firebase, allowing real-time updates and synchronization across devices. The voice assistant, Vapi, was integrated to make the recipe-finding process hands-free and user-friendly. To add a layer of motivation, we implemented a reward/punishment system with Sui coins using the Sui blockchain, encouraging users to use their ingredients wisely.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating voice functionality with the Vapi assistant presented some technical challenges, particularly in ensuring permissions and passing the user's fridge items to the conversation. Additionally, working with blockchain technology to handle Sui coin transactions required significant learning and debugging, especially in securely managing the user wallets and rewards. We also faced issues with syncing ingredient expiration dates and managing notifications effectively.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully integrated blockchain rewards in a practical application, which adds a unique twist to food management apps. The voice assistant is intuitive and responsive, making the recipe feature highly user-friendly. We're also proud of the seamless real-time synchronization of fridge items via Firebase, creating a smooth experience for users across multiple devices.

What we learned

We gained hands-on experience with integrating voice assistants into mobile applications, learned about blockchain development using Sui, and deepened our understanding of real-time data management with Firebase. Additionally, we learned how to design a system that motivates users through gamification, combining practical utility with user engagement strategies.

What's next for Chef It Up

Next, we plan to refine the voice assistant's capabilities to handle more complex recipe queries and improve its accuracy. We also want to explore partnerships with grocery stores to integrate automatic item addition through receipt scanning. Expanding the reward system with more varied incentives, such as discounts or loyalty points with eco-friendly brands, is another direction we are excited to explore. Lastly, we'll work on scaling the app to accommodate more users and enhance the app's overall performance.
