Chef'd: Cook it. Rate it. Make it again.
Inspiration
The inspiration behind Chef'd stemmed from our observation of a fundamental disconnect in the modern home cooking experience. For many—especially college students—the culinary journey often stalls due to a lack of confidence and guidance, a problem reflected in data showing that over half of Americans struggle with basic recipes.
We noticed that the current digital landscape for cooking is broken, plagued by unreliable "five-star" ratings from users who never actually cooked a dish, alongside recipe sites cluttered with ads and unhelpful walls of text. We set out to build a platform that fosters genuine trust and growth, moving away from vanity metrics to focus on real behavioral signals.
Building the Platform
To bring Chef'd to life, we focused on building a "kitchen" that serves every skill level, from the rookie to the pro. Key features include:
- The Encore Score — A proprietary rating system that replaces traditional stars by asking a single, actionable question: "Would you make this again?" This binary feedback loop is converted into a weighted 1-to-5 badge, providing a more accurate reflection of a recipe's quality.
- Native Recipe Builder — A streamlined, drag-and-drop tool that allows users to post structured content in under two minutes.
- Intelligent URL Import — Instantly extracts data from existing recipe sites.
- AI Assistant — Acts like a chef in your pocket, helping cooks find specific meals or discover top-rated dishes within their own network.
Challenges
Throughout this project, we faced the significant challenge of addressing the "Missing Middle"—the space where social media feels too broad and food blogs feel too labor-intensive. Our goal was to create a community where intermediate cooks could actually learn from their efforts rather than just collecting empty likes. We had to carefully iterate on our feedback architecture to ensure that the Encore Score remained a reliable, community-vetted metric.
What We Learned
Ultimately, we learned that the biggest barrier to home cooking is not a lack of interest, but a lack of reliability in the tools available. By prioritizing ease of use and authentic feedback, we have created a platform that grows with our users.
