Our inspiration was the successful virtual concerts held during COVID-19 in Minecraft and Fortnite, as well as virtual social sites such as Club Penguin. We liked the immersive qualities of these sites, as a vast majority of online event forums do not provide the atmosphere or excitement a real-life event does. Overall, we wanted to create a more accessible, fun way for people to experience a live concert amidst online limitations.
What it does
We made a virtual nightclub you can join through a browser and hang out with people who join the site. We planned to add chat, dancing, and other immersive features, but unfortunately ran out of time. We also added a restroom area.
How we built it
As we are all design majors, we worked hard on the concept and the pixel art. We began our process by addressing issues we all face daily, and one of our main focuses was Covid-19, mental health, and our inability to attend lively social events. This led to our idea of creating a virtual club. We then worked on creating the pixel art for the rooms and the animal avatars in Photoshop and Procreate. The prototype took up the majority of our time. The server is built in NodeJS and served with express, real-time communication through socket.io, and the client graphics are built using Pixi.js.
Challenges we ran into
Unfortunately, we ran out of time and one of us had to leave for work early in the morning. Because of this, we were unable to finish implementing all the features we had wanted to add.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our idea. We believe that it can serve as a fun website for students especially to hang out with friends and talk to people online that they otherwise would be unable to meet.
What we learned
It was 2 members' first hackathon, so we had a lot of fun. We also learned how to use PixiJS, which was completely new to us. We also learned the extensive amount of time that not only programming takes, but also brainstorming an idea. For future hackathons, we hope to come more prepared with an idea in mind so that we can spend the bulk of our time designing and coding.
What's next for cheer up!!
As previously mentioned, we would love to add features to make this site more immersive, such as walking and dancing animations. We would also like to create more animal characters and different rooms so that it feels more like a real club. Our final goal would be to host live concerts on our site.
