Inspiration

Our inspiration for our project was the theme of the AI Assistant, Verity, from a Minecraft mod. We also took heavy inspiration from various weather apps.

What it does

This app lets the user enter their zip code and check their live weather conditions from the area. The rain data is taken from Open-Meteo, and is the National Weather Service checks for official alerts and tells the user if it's safe to fly their drone.

How we built it

We used Html/CSS/Js to code the basic layout of this program in Visual Studio Code. After, we used Claude to help make animations (such as the background) and help with finding the API. Use of AI: We didn't ask AI to write any specific code for us, but rather as a tool to ask clarifying questions and possibly help with troubling aspects of the code (such as the API, which we hadn't any experience with beforehand, or the animation/moving gradient in the background).

Challenges we ran into

Coding: We ended up realizing that the API we were initially using was expiring information every 10 minutes which meant that the information we used was old data that was no longer true. To combat this. we had to use another API (National Weather Service) to use if Open-Meteo's data had expired.

Real-Life: Another major aspect that hindered us a little was the fact that this was our first Hackathon, and because of that, we had no experience, or any expectations of what we were supposed to do.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were proud of our idea to make the replica of the Minecraft mod, Verity, to provide information to the user and make it seem more modern.

What we learned

We learned how to make moving backgrounds and find APIs using AI. 2 out of the 3 of us learned HTML basics for the first time in the span of 2 days.

What's next for CheckSky!

We plan to develop Verity into an actual AI model that stays relevant to the CheckSky! topic instead of using questions from the dropdown menu (asking specific natural disasters, expected forecasts for the next day).
